Say "Hello" to Display Names!

This is not a good idea for multiple reasons but some people will be mad for username snipes and people impersonation changing their name to “Kreekcraft” HEY GUYS I GOT ROBUX AT bruh.gg, and it should cost maybe a LITTLE of robux because it would be better because scam bots are just bots and if they dont spend robux because they aren’t going to spend robux.

why would people be mad for username snipes? imagine not having to snipe a username anymore and just using whatever u want?
im pretty sure people that care about username snipes will be happy about this. if they like 3 letters names they can finally have them with no struggles. impersonating is what’s im concerned about. anything else seems really good with this update and im really interested to see how this goes for roblox and how appreciated this update will be. it sounds interesting and all, but as i said, impersonating is the main issue with it.

Love this update, however I do have a suggestion. Make it so that certain names cannot be used by a different player, just so that its harder for people to impersonate Star-Creators, admins, etc. Other than that, I believe this update will be epic. Also, make it so that if someone is somehow able to impersonate a star creator, simply reset the display name to the username and make it so that the given name cannot be chosen again. This way, as time goes on creators will be harder to impersonate.

Example: Denis wants to have a display name of “Denis”. If roblox catches someone impersonating denis with this username, DenIs, they can make that certain name locked, not being able to be used by a regular roblox user.

I heavily dislike this and instead of making a useless post about impersonation, how can we be sure moderating inappropriate names will be moderated? I’ve seen so many people bypass the chat filter, bypass the name filter, bypass the image filter and I have concerns about the video filters too. What is next? People running around with sexually explicit or generally explicit display names?

We should be saying “Goodbye” to Display names.

They wouldn’t be, good admin scripts use UserId and in the worst cases would be using Player.Name, both of which are unique identifiers that aren’t affected by display names at all.

Your suggestion makes little sense to me, what about community owners such as myself who have been impersonated? You can search my old username up and find atleast 8 accounts that have been named to try to impersonate me. ROBLOX should look out for all players - not just star creators or admins.

I’m not too sure about this at all, I personally think this shouldn’t be added like how other games like Minecraft just have usernames and that’s it. I believe display names are just really only good being used for chatroom stuff, and forums. Place like that. I’d rather keep it simple to that. I wonder how the owner of KAT would feel right now on the excess name changes she has.

I don’t see how the impersonation risk is going to be solved. If a player’s username is going to be replaced by a display name on the leaderboard, and above their avatar, how will players identify each other? Obviously you can have both the display name and username appear above your avatar, however, I feel that there will be too much going on above a player’s head. Display names are a great idea, but it’s going to be very hard to moderate.

I’m not worried about impersonation, either, it already exists. I’m worried about inappropriate display names.

So would everyone’s username would be reseted when this updates comes?

This update seems great, but there are several problems that I have major concerns about, and so do other people.

Firstly, being the obvious one, impersonation, could be used for identity theft, scamming, and could possibly make banning exploiters from games much harder (here comes the question, should we use the username or the display name to ban exploiters from our games?)

Secondly, Roblox itself may have some revenue loss, a lot of people want to change their username and I have no doubt that display names will be used way more than usernames since they’re free to use. Changing usernames already has a unique touch to it, taking it away would be a pity in my opinion.

Thirdly, groups. Groups are going to have at least some influence on this change, specifically groups like clans, or “serious” roleplay groups like armies, SCP Foundations, etc. As said before, it can be used for impersonating other people to get their desired rank (leading to the group on potential risk).

I’m very skeptical about this update and have a lot of mixed opinions. I think it should be reverted.

I think this update is great for ROBLOX. No more will people need to fear that their name is going to be taken, or have a name like mine and needing R$1000 just to change it.

To solve impersonation, we can look to Twitter and YouTube. Both of their sites allow non-unique names, but important people can verify themselves on both platforms. On every comment section and tweet thread, I see plenty of impersonators, yet Twitter and YouTube aren’t under fire for impersonation.

Perhaps adding a verified icon next to a display name can solve things. Also, display names are most likely able to be toggled off, so many devs can just script their own leaderboard if display names are bad to them.

Certain features might be difficult or impossible to implement in custom player lists, such as follower and friend request status. It would be nice to have a simple way to prevent display names from being used at all (including the CoreGui) in a certain Game.

I hope you guys thought this update out well.

Risks include: Impersonation, lack of accountability, friends not knowing who each other is (I have yet to meet a user who actually uses the alias system, it’s too out of the way ),possibly breaking custom chat systems(?) and probably a lot of things that I haven’t even thought about.

I feel like this is a good update if implemented correctly, I feel like in order to set a Display Name you should first have to have an account for some period of time (to prevent bots from impersonating Devs and such) it should also say your @ underneath your display name in-game (again to prevent impersonating popular figures or developers) but it should be slightly smaller than your display name. All in all I’m for this update but a few tweaks will help it out a lot. Also player verification would also be a welcome feature, so you know that the person you’re talking to is the real person and not an impersonator sort of like how it works on twitter and youtube

I think some of y’all are forgetting that this is gonna bring huge problems with community moderation. Recording someone doing something against their community in-game rules and using that as evidence will hardly be reliable anymore.

This probably won’t be heard, but I do want the problem to be adressed.

YES! This is going to be an amazing update! I am very excited, as I will be able to not use some name that exists so i can have an account without username overlap! Very pog update, I think this update will be very great! also, it will show your real username under the display names, so that deals with impersonation.

It’s probably going to work like regular usernames, where there cant be multiple of the same name.

What about a small dev like me? Someones name could be 4096x2160p and then have the displayname be 4096x2160 and do something like saying “I WILL GIVE FREE ROBUX TO EVERYONE IF GIVE PASSWORD” then people give me a bad rep because of the inpersonator
