There two sides for this update a good and a bad side. The good side is that if you have made a “cringey” roblox username and dont have 1k robux to change the username this is perfect but the bad thing is people will fake being other youtubers/devs and theres going to be more scams involved inside games.
I think this update could be amazing for those who want a name but it’s already taken.
People are saying it could be abused easily but, that’s not exactly true. If roblox moderation is good this time we won’t find people impersonating others. Although roblox moderation isn’t the best they could easily stop others from doing the obvious ones like roblox or builderman even developers.
If people try to impersonate someone who roblox allowed, roblox can put impersonation against tos.
They should also put a time period so only month old accounts should be able to do this.
After that the update has no problems.

It’s great and all but uh, but I think display names should be unique too. For example, Kids that are not in the dev forum might not know this and then they see their favorite youtube with the same display name and think they’re real so that fake youtube says that they will give them free Robux which is a scam, obviously. Now that’s just my opinion.
I see many benefits and many mistakes with this the main thing being people like scammers and impersonation but i would have to try this for myself, the main problem is that you dont push out the beta testing to other country like the UK where I am living and I would love it if you could push out beta features for other countries

I have not read all 800+ replies (I have a life) but uh… Are there any plans to limit the characters available in DisplayNames a bit? I ask because ဪ is one character and is currently allowed in DisplayNames, which means that this very reasonable string is allowed:
ဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪဪ
While I don’t mean to discriminate against anybody that uses Myanmar script, I cannot reasonably accommodate this sort of name in my UI. The length alone is absurd.

Not unless you click on the plist slot, A kid seeing their “favorite youtuber” offering them free robux doesn’t make them say “hmm let me click on the plist slot to see if they are real”

seems like pretty great update. good job roblox. although i share all the other concerns that others have about impersonation,
roblox will most likely put it under your ingame username as well as the player list! The display names are also moderated, so its probably not THAT bad. Ya gotta be at least slightly optimistic!

My username isnt that bad so I don’t care much about this update. For people who need it its good. I will stick to using usernames so impersonation isn’t bad. I am against this update because of the impersonation. Thats it. I wouldn’t be against it if we could get verified but we can’t

I’m truly sorry, but personally, I don’t really like this new update. It seems great for roleplayers, people with long usernames, etc. But despite the fact, people could impersonate lots of people. I love the new update, but at the same time, I don’t really think it’s a good idea.
Anyway, sorry Roblox! It’s just my honest opinion.
It will be great to be able to change your “name” for free, but I’m worried about the impersonation and what they will do about it (For example people cant change the display name to real usernames.)
Bad idea in my opinion. Imagine you had a scammer right, then he changed his/her display name to an admin or a content creator. Little kids aren’t gonna know the difference…

I do agree, roblox should verify users who deserve verification, as that would be the best measure against fraud. But still, have some optimism, everyone needs it this year.
IdontPlayz343, that’s only in your profile. In-game they will have your display name be whatever you put or what the developer put.
“Ah yes, let me release a feature that allows people to impersonate Roblox staff and top devs.”

I mean honestly. Come on. Do you think the people who implemented this are stupid?
There’s already bans in place for top devs and staff, and I imagine the list of blacklisted display names will increase as time goes on.

Na7whal, Roblox probably does it because of their headquarters location, which is in America atm.
They might but I honestly think if you immpersonate people, they’ll have a report displayname system or something. Or they might have like what you said, a blacklist for display names such as roblox staff, content creators, developers, and etc.
