I really do not like the idea of this update, Please consider the fact people can try to pretend to be other people. I really feel the user name should be whats first then instead of this display name have it a Nickname but only below the user name. I just know I wouldn’t want to see someone with my username as their display name. I help with a 11k member group, it concerns me.
I can think of a few issues this change may bring, I also just think its a pointless update. just make it easier to change usernames, and allow spaces (i know its just 1000Robux, but to some kids that’s a lot)
I’m not so fond of this update as I genuinely cannot think of a single reason on how this would benefit this platform.
First of all, impersonation cases will rise. I feel like a lot of players would change their display name to YouTubers, Developers, or any other famous people. How would we differentiate players if all of them had the same display name? It would cause quite a bit of confusion.
Secondly, this would get rid of the use of usernames in general. What’s the point of usernames if display names will act as their username in chat, leaderstats, and nametags?
Lastly, this would get rid of rare roblox usernames. If anyone can have a display name of a word, rare roblox usernames wouldn’t feel so “special”. This reason is the least of the concerns, though.
I just can’t think of any good reasons how this would benefit roblox.
If someones display name is same to that players user name then there will be a tick next to it and this will make it so that other people cant steal your idenity because if they set their display name to your display name than they wont have a tick
This is helpful for people who are stuck with old usernames and wanted to change it for years but there was a pay wall.
There is a possible impersonation of very known developers (I doubt Moderators and Star Program members since they are a part of Roblox and are highly protected) who are vulnerable to these type of stuff. Same with other famous Roblox Community members like clothing designers, artists, influencers etc.
The best solution to this is to block people for setting their Display Name as someone’s else username and made a way to get a “verified” status like on Twitter and other social medias, with very strict criteria list, to prevent further impersonations.
My general view is that this is a great update but it has it’s downsides that should be adressed.
Impersonation is the first problem of this update and I doubt this would be filtered from the roblox filters.
Also, something I had in mind: Would this discourage the use of changing your username? People would see that if displaynames are available, then would there be not much of a point in changing your username since this is free and there isnt any need to bother? This upcoming update might need some reconsideration before rolling it out.
So Roblox admins, Star Video Creators and popular developers get filtered. What about the not that popular developers?
Wouldn’t it be better if people that are part of the Devex program to be also filtered? This is a much wider range than only popular developers. What kinda feels unfair, as smaller developer.
Even the popular people’s username filter can be bypassed. For an unaware kid, it won’t make much difference if they see [mrflimflam] or [mrfilmflam]. They will just open the scam link because look, their favorite youtuber just offered them robux for free
I believe this could be used in phishing, as you could say you’re a certain person and get their personal information.
You could put your username as someone’s close friend and they could tell you some information.
You should try fix issues like that.
The whole point of “having a cool username” is gone, you are now able to change your name to whatever you want. This will cause a hell lot of confusions in-game. Since people couldn’t use their real names as their username, people got usernames as it is basically their identity and that is what other players identify them with.
This feature will cause people to change their names every week or 2 weeks just because they got “bored”, and for everyone else except them: it’s annoying.
I honestly see no point whatsoever in this update, this brings so much controversy to the table and I don’t see why anyone would like this update.
People are going to have generic usernames like “Greg”, “Alex”, “David” etc, which would make identifying a single person pretty hard.
Let’s see, not a lot is clear from this post, let’s see what kind of feature Roblox comes up with to combat these drawbacks.

that is my entire worry! It is going to be impossible to find users. This will probably end up with a lot of impersonation, too. Like, for example, anyone could now be Poke or MrFlimFlam or Flamingo, as i bet he will change his display name to.
