Sci-Fi Quarantine Building Journey

With school starting soon, I thought I would share what I’ve done in quarantine, I started developing right around the beginning of the pandemic when all the schools shut down. Mostly learning scripting and UI design but also some builds that I made over the summer. Hopefully this will inspire somebody to start building if you haven’t started already!

Anyways here’s a few builds that I had made, sadly I lost a lot of my other practice builds.

1st month of building

I had no idea how to build at this point or utilize lighting I just basically made a simple pattern with some shapes and then mirrored the ceiling and floor.

Overly neon door that did not turn out good, especially with the monocolor.

I decided to make a obstacle course map(this is just part of it), my structure and building skills had improved but I still struggled with lighting to emphasize this I went back to this build a few months later, below is a image of the build with heavily improved lighting and no adjustments to the build itself. Although there are a few things I would change about the build including color and materials.

2 months of building

This build was particularly memorable because it was where I made major strides in lighting improvements. Also incorporates elements of some of my earlier builds.

After some practice with my earlier builds, I decided to recreate my first build but better.
It’s a bit bigger than my other builds so multiple screenshots !!
(SADLY THIS WAS BEFORE FUTURE LIGHTING WAS RELEASED)

3 Months - Today

Here are some more recent builds that I made, I was focusing on ui design a lot more so I wasn’t building as much.

This was my first attempt at a modular build, it turned out quite well in my opinion, Credits for the nature assets go to SuperMatthew.

Anyways that’s it, just wanted to share my progress building before school starts for me, hopefully somebody is inspired to start building!

Have a nice day!!

WOW! This is super overbuilt for an obby! It looks incredible! Keep it up.

I know the obby is only part of the map.

The game’s about halfway into development It’s like a survivor style game with minigames that happen on various planets in space which is where the sci fi theme comes in! Currently working on a gamemode with rocket launchers and blowing up a alien city

You have to be lying about how long you’ve been building. It’s too good.

It’s like a sci style survivor game set in space, basically each round involves going to different planets which represent different minigames until only one player is remaining.

The last pictures scene is perfect for a Sci-Fi type build, really love the lighting and vibrant haze the room has over it, good job

Is that last scene really in Roblox? It looks so good it could almost be rendered in a modern game engine. Really pushing the limits of what we have to work with, love it!

That looks amazing! I just have one question really that might be able to help me out, how do you make these effects? (The blue fog floating, picture will be posted below!)

If you could answer this, that’d be great and thank you!

This one is actually pretty easy !! You can just grab some particles from toolbox or make your own and then set them over the entire area. I can probably make it a free model actually give me a second

Game’s still in development so it’s not open to playing yet !! Might make a recruitment post for alpha testing once that’s ready though

Some quick tips off the top of my head are

  1. Planning out your maps (I like to make a undetailed version of my map with just rectangles so I can plan out how I’m going to do everything)

  2. Using references is super helpful, you’ll have a better idea of what you’re trying to build (ex:if you’re trying to build like a electrical box then do research on what a electrical box looks like)

and honestly just practicing helps a lot
