"Script Editor's read-only due to an unstable connection..." too frequent, random intervals

image
Recently (about a week or so), I’ve been getting these a lot. Unlike before when it was maybe once or twice a week, I’m now getting them almost at least once per hour.
Unfortunately I’m not able to reproduce this since it seems to happen at random, but I’ll describe what happens:

  • There’s no specific time when it happens. Just whenever I’m working (which is any time of the day)
  • I usually notice it more when I refocus on a place with an open script. It also happens when I’m just editing something in the workspace, but it’s way more noticeable when I’m coming back to a place I haven’t touched in a while. This is the annoying bit, right as I’m about to type what I have in mind, it hits me with the read-only notice. I figured this might be a factor because I often have to go in/out of working due to various things I’m doing irl, leaving me to keep my pc open for a while; but I’ve been doing that for at least 2 years now and it’s never been a problem before, not too much for me to notice anyway… I’m here typing all this while the place I’m working on just finished reconnecting!.
  • It can last anywhere from 5 seconds to reconnecting the whole place. Mind you, I have a wired internet connection with an unlimited 200mbps plan so I don’t think it’s my internet connection.
  • I’ve only noticed it affect one place, even when I have more than one open. This leads me to think it’s not a problem with Roblox as a whole and reinforces my thinking that it’s not my internet connection. Also, I’m used to it taking only a few seconds, never reconnecting the whole place.
  • It happens to any place I’m working on. It could be a baseplate with one script to a full game, which I think is the weird bit.

System Info:

  • Intel(R) Core™ i1-7700 CPU @ 3.60 GHz
  • 16.0 GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

Beta Features:

  • Assistant Preview
  • Dragger QoL Improvements
  • EditableImage and EditableMesh
  • Live Animation Creator
  • Texture Generator
  • Updated Roblox Controls

Please help. It’s been incredibly annoying… Sorry if this report seems like a mess, it’s my first time posting one and if anyone has advice, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Expected behavior

I expect that I’d only get this notice when I know I have an unstable connection, and not just… randomly, for seemingly no reason. Maybe even getting more detail so I’d have a better understanding of what exactly is causing the unstable connection…

I had this issue i changed my wifi card and it worked maybe try that?

Yeah… I don’t think so, I have a wired connection with 0 internet related problems except live scripting alone

This is just an acknowledgment announcement!

We’ve filed a ticket into our internal database for this issue, and will come back as soon as we have updates!

Thanks for flagging!

I’m on Xfinity Gigabit internet, when I was on Wi-Fi, this was happening constantly, so I switched to hard wire and am running a cable straight from my router to my laptop.

I found this because it’s been over a half an hour now and I STILL can’t edit a script. I can open a new instance of studio but I can’t edit this script at all.

This update is crazy broken. I’ve got a real-time network monitor I setup because of this, my connection is fine, I can steam Netflix and YouTube in 2k without a hiccup, I can play StarCraft 2 co-op, not so much as moment of lag, but somehow, my Roblox Studio since this update can’t maintain a stable enough connection to be allowed to edit a script?

I just saved studio to re-load it so I could try and go back to what I was doing and got this error:

“Kicked from Live Scripting Session: Script was deleted - Studio”

Context: I did have about 6 modules open that I was working with as I’m in the middle of a major update.

Laptop Specs

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 10 Home
System Model: Asus ROG Strix G713QR_G713QR
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX with Radeon Graphics, 3301 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 64.0 GB
Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU

As I said above, currently hardwired to Xfinity Gigabit.
Stable connection on everything but Roblox Studio.
In Studio if I play the same game my connection isn’t stable enough to edit, my ping (turning on performance stats) is 23ms average and stable.

Update: I wrote this around 3~ hours ago, and I mentioned the error saving. Even though I was pretty sure I never had Team Create on, I decided to double-check and I turned it off.

3 hours later…

It never saved.

Studio is extremely broken! I have no idea how much work I’m going to lose as this session was originally opened yesterday during a major update across multiple scripts.

Even closing it (Just with X) didn’t work nor Alt+F4, I had to Ctrl+Alt+Delete to force close Roblox Studio.

I think I’m going to wait until Roblox Studio gets an update and fixes this, I don’t need this kind of headache in my life.

Hi @NoobFragged,

Sorry for the frustration. It sounds like there are two issues based on your description.

I just saved Studio to re-load it so I could try to go back to what I was doing and got this error:
“Kicked from Live Scripting Session: Script was deleted - Studio”

This message means that someone or some operation deleted the script while you were in the live scripting session. Did you happen to perform any undo/redo actions or delete the script that you had open in the editor?

Update: I wrote this about 3 hours ago, and I mentioned the error saving. Even though I was pretty sure I never had Team Create on, I decided to double-check and turned it off.

From the picture, it looks like Studio couldn’t establish a stable connection to save the place, and it even shows as disconnected. Unfortunately, the save operation can get stuck if it continually fails to save the file to Roblox.

Are you still experiencing this issue with the save operation being stuck today? If so, could you please file another bug? This is a different issue from the original post, and filing a separate bug will help us track it down more effectively.

Thank you!

Hi @Riesegarder,

We made some adjustments to the connection detection for LiveScripting. Could you try it out and see if the unstable connection issue has improved?

Note that LiveScripting will mark editor as readonly to prevent the local edits get lost in bad connection. If the Studio fails to send message longer than certain amount of time the editor will still become readonly eventually.

Thank you!

The only thing I can think of like this I did was I wanted to make a backup of a script I was working on so I duplicated it, then deleted the children of the duplicate since I was not going to use them. I’ve probably done something like this thousands of times before though and never produced an error.

This is the heart of the problem. It’s been having problems staying connected since the update before this happened. The issue is that it’s not staying connected and there’s absolutely NO reason for it. It’s not my internet, it’s not my computer, this problem is on Roblox’s end. I’m hard-wired on gigabit LAN with a high-end laptop with every setting optimized for a consistent workflow. I can stream the highest-end videos, play the highest-end MMORPGS, and do anything on Roblox for sure with no lag, but I can’t keep connected to Roblox Studio for 5 minutes without having my script editing cut off every few minutes because my connection to Roblox is unstable? I’ve used this laptop in Roblox Studio since I got it just over 2 years ago, and I never had any kind of issue conning with Studio until recently. I haven’t updated or changed anything else, not even a Windows update, the only thing that updated since then was Roblox.

I’m about to log into Roblox Studio now for the first time since I posted this response. However, I would note two things.

  1. I’m pretty sure the unstable connection is the issue. All the issues and errors came after I got the unstable connection error. So I imagine if Studio did not have a stable connection, the rest would not function correctly either.

  2. I was not previously aware it had been fixed so lower classmen could post in bug reports. I can certainly do so if the problem persists today.

  3. The first thing I did when I got back into Studio was disable Team Create, so if the issue does not persist, I will simply leave it off.

Thanks for the response. I can confirm from my end that I haven’t experienced it for the past few days, I think a day or two after making this post. When did you make the adjustments?

I’m glad to hear the issue has been mitigated on your end. The key change was that we made some adjustments to the LiveScripting connection tolerance mechanism on last Friday. Feel free to reach out if you are still experiencing the issue.

Have a great coding day!
