Seeking Opinions about brainstormed combat system. Explained in Detail

Hello! I’ve been brainstorming a concept for a combat system, and I’d like to share them below. I’d like your HONEST feedback. Here we go!

How will it work?

The combat system will work in a turn-based, grid-style system. Think of XCOM or fire emblem, for example. However, it adds much a few new twists to the gameplay.

One of the main mechanics in the combat is the ‘light level’. When in and out of combat, the player will have a light level which will influence many factors. For example, the higher your light level, the more you can see and the overall safer you’ll be, but the darker it becomes, the harder the battle becomes as it becomes harder to hit enemies, enemies become stronger, and your stress rises faster. Furthermore, your vision is greatly reduced. However, you’ll get much more valuable loot in return. Each player has their own light level, ranging from 0 (no light) to 5 (radiant light). If a player runs out of light, as long as they are within another light source, they will be safer. If multiple players are nearby, their light will be combined, becoming even stronger. You do NOT want to be isolated in the darkness if you are unprepared.

Stress is another mechanic that is very important. It starts off at zero, and will gradually climb. Once the player reaches 50 stress, the player will receive a permanent ailment which will persist until the player seeks medical attention. These ailments will influence the player’s behavior in combat. As the player takes damage or is exposed to the darkness more, they will gain stress, but as the player defeats enemies or rests, their stress will gradually go down. Once the player reaches 100 percent, the player has a heart attack and instantly KO’d.

Unlike traditional games, health also works a little differently. For the most part, it works the same, when you take damage, you lose health. However, when you reach 0 health, you don’t die immediately. Rather, you are inflicted by ‘Deaths Gate’, giving you a significant amount of stress, and your stats are weakened significantly. However, ANY form of damage you take has a chance to end you, growing more likely with each consecutive hit you take. It is partially removed upon being healed, but you will still suffer from the stat penalty until you get that removed.

If you do happen to ‘die’, the punishment is very great, causing you to lose a significant amount of your items except for your weapons and armor, and you will also lose exp in stats and your overall character, which may result in you forgetting an ability and potentially even your strength.

If you do not think you can win a battle, you have the option to flee from the battle, but that will cause you to not gain any rewards and will give you a significant stress bonus. You can NOT, however, flee if you are at death’s gate.

Classes

The player starts off as a mercenary and, as the player uses various weapons, they will grow more skilled with that weapon, and, in return, will have access to stronger weapons of that category, will unlock various abilities, but will also unlock various traits as well. As the player improves in various skills, they will have access to new classes, each with their own stats, playstyle, abilities, and traits. Once the player unlocks these, however, they can choose to mix and match the abilities and traits with other classes. Any weapon can be used by any class, mind you.

My Thoughts

Personally, I like this idea greatly. It rewards players for taking risks but also encourages players to exercise caution. Any action you do can result in death, and the player has to really think things through. It also encourages the player to rest at times, removing their stress and healing them instead of simply using healing items.
I generally try to steer away from RNG, but I feel as if the RNG, in this case, is fair.

Your Thoughts

What do YOU think?
  • I like the idea!
  • I like the concept, but some things could use a change.
  • I do not know enough information.
  • I am not a fan of the idea.

I find the stress part kind of harsh.

That is insane. 0-0

It is harsh, but that is the intention of it. Don’t worry, though, stress is something that isn’t too big of a threat as long as you are in the light, and there will be ways of lowering your stress.

This sounds amazing…
as a real game, but I’m not sure if Roblox’s average playerbase has the right kind of attention span for a game like that.
