Seeking Roblox Career Advice

I’m an ambitious computer science student attending BYU. I’m looking to turn Roblox development into a career. I was a software engineer for a year and have made a few hundred dollars from roblox throughout my childhood but have no professional experience on the roblox platform.

I am looking for advice on the best ways to get started and experiences from people who have been able to make a successful career out of roblox game development/scripting.

I do solo development by working on passion projects in my free time. I work a part-time to full-time job during the summer and go to college for the fall and spring. Many higher-end studios exist that can offer stability, though. They’d all likely enjoy your background in computer science, even if not graduated yet.

Here’s a list of some I know:

Some companies, like Gamefam, have issues with not paying their developers and having a bad workplace environment. I assume those issues have been fixed, but it’s something to note.

Being in a studio like that is probably the most stable. Though on the career ladder side of things, I’d list your options based on pay like this:

  • Software engineering
  • game dev off Roblox
  • game dev on Roblox

I did look at BYU and they have a program for Computer Science: Animation and Games (BS)
and a club for game devs.

I’ve noticed that some jobs for roblox that pay 150k+ list having successful games on the roblox platform as a strong bonus. Would it be realistic to transition into that? If roblox development is harder to scale and grow in income, I might consider going back to my traditional software engineering career.

Hopefully I can help even though I do this as a hobby.
I do have friends though.

Using my friends as an example.
They prioritize networking.

You can make a bunch of social media videos. I personally wouldn’t recommend it as your primary advertising because social media is hit or miss. It also requires a lot of consistency.

And my other friend, he sponsors his games, but he also makes a bunch of games and grows his community through each one. As opposed to focusing on one centralized game.

Free UGC seems to be a somewhat effective way of getting players, but the catch is that it can’t be too easy to get.

As far as I can tell, if you don’t got money, you ain’t going nowhere.

Stick with games that are easy to make.

I haven’t transitioned to big studios, but I can try @-ing some people I know of that have. Roblox used to have LevelUp videos where people from TwinAtlas and other studios showed up. Maybe they can jump in here.
