Selling UI as XD Files

Hello there!

I am currently considering opening a UI design portfolio, but I had a question.

Is it acceptable to sell UI as an Adobe XD file?

I have not purchased any non-scripted UI from anyone, so I am not sure what is normal or not.

Any feedback helps!

  • Adobe XD are fine
  • Adobe XD files are not acceptable

if this doesn’t belong in #help-and-feedback:art-design-support I will move it

I am aware that the poll has a grammar error, however changing it will wipe it.

Feel free to reply with feedback!

It’s fine if you sell XD files, but also provide some other way also. Even though it’s free, not everyone has Adobe XD and if people are paying :moneybag: for it, you should definitely consider customer satisfaction.

Perhaps it is fine to sell the design itself, but ultimately if you want to give people value for money I think an XD file is useless in Roblox. The UI will still need to be manually constructed in Roblox, and that is a large part of a UI designer’s job on Roblox in my opinion. Putting the UI into Roblox is something I find many people still struggle with already. (XD files are not commonly used on Roblox to my knowledge.)

Another reason why I think just selling the design won’t be value for money is how games on Roblox tend to have very little emphasis on ‘good design’. This is mainly because many users just don’t care about what the UI looks like and instead only being able to use the UI is what matters (from a higher design perspective, anyway). Why pay $X for an outside-of-Roblox design when you can just slap on some lazily styled buttons, frames and text labels inside Roblox and be done with it? (Not complaining if you’re pushing for good design on Roblox, though )

Yes, as EmeraldSlash said, “UI Designer” in Roblox doesn’t really definite you as only a Graphic Creator… Most work as a “Robloxian” should be usable in Roblox Studio, with the right scale & positions,

Occassionally, you’re even asked to code the UI, Animate it, making it Xbox compatible, etc… or atleast it should be the case, because you know your work better than anyone since you did it from scratch, i don’t believe you’ll earn much if you’re stuck with just sending XD files which your commissioner probably doesn’t even have it downloaded.

Yes and No

It’s a yes if the buyer agrees with it and can put the UI together themselves, but it’s a no if they can’t do that (you should give a discount if the buyer agrees to this because putting UI together in studio tends to be tedious)

You should lean towards always putting it together in studio yourself, it’s far too common for good UI to be butchered because it’s not properly put together in studio

It’s acceptable if they accept it. When I do UI commissions for people and if it involves more tricky designs through Photoshop, I do it there and export to Roblox Studio and make sure I scale everything properly and such and then I send them the .rbxl file or .rbxm file.

I feel like a part of a UI Designers job is to make a Scripters job easier.

Alright, thanks for all of the feedback! I will take it into consideration.

Giving the customer a non-scripted UI will lower the price of the commission as the customer might not know how to script or might mess up the UI instead because of their creativity. By messing up I mean not following the UI genre.

From that being said, if you want to earn more money and attracts more customer using your service, you should not sell non-scripted UI but a scripted one instead. Rather than that, you have to ensure that your script in the UI is in high quality and isn’t messed up but clean and easy to follow up by adding hints near the script, explaining what this code does. Etc.

I, a past UI designer. Sold a few UI products that is non-scripted and I felt quite uncomfortable that the customer would pay and then threw it away because he/she doesn’t know how to interact with it.

However, when I start selling scripted UI, I won’t really be worried when giving it to the customer because the customer just have to install the product into their game and maybe edit some of the properties to meet their game’s genre etc.

To sum up, I believe it’s bad to sell non-scripted UI products to the customer unless they told you to do so as many issues would come up after you sold the product unless they are somewhat skilled in handling the file.
