Serious FPS issue when window is active

I previously made a thread about this that was pretty roundly ignored so I’ll give it another shot and explain myself a bit better this time.

I’m running a pretty powerful PC, i7 4790k, GTX 980Ti, 16GB RAM.

I try to play Roblox on a 1440p monitor (ROG Swift)

Roblox has great frame rates (I presume 60fps) whenever I’m in Studio but the moment I play a game I encounter the following problem.

ROBLOX WINDOW IS ACTIVE: 22FPS

22FPS

ROBLOX WINDOW IS INACTIVE: 60FPS (Ie I alt tab into another window on my other monitor)

Even when I press Print-Screen the Roblox screenshot notification window makes the window inactive returning my FPS to a playable state.

FURTHER DIAGNOSTICS INFORMATION:

When the Roblox window is inactive my GPU Utilization sits at around 16% (giving me 60FPS) , the second I click into the window to make it active the GPU Utilization drops to 4-5%. This happens every time.

Things I have tried:

  • Reinstalling Roblox
  • Updating Graphics Drivers
  • Completely Uninstalling and Reinstalling Graphics Drivers using a driver remover utility
  • Turning Roblox Graphics Down (has 0 impact) - Regardless the graphics setting is obviously not the problem.

This does not happen to any other game.

I am happy to provide any extra diagnostic information you guys need!

Thank you and please get back to me ASAP.

You mentioned that you updated your graphics drivers, but I don’t know whether you used another utility like you did in reinstalling them or something other than the device manager, so forgive me if I’m asking the obvious.

When you open the device manager > display adapters, do any of the items in that category have a yellow exclamation mark next to them?

I had an issue when I installed Windows 10 where I would get around 4-8 FPS in-game because Windows 10 wasn’t compatible with my graphics driver, even if I reinstalled it. My laptop’s hardware was pretty crappy (but not old), so you might be experiencing the same issue but not as severely because your CPU isn’t as bad as my laptop’s (my laptop was using the CPU to render stuff since the GPU was out of commission).

Regardless of whether this is the issue or not:
Which operating system are you using?
Is it fine in Play Solo / Start Player in Studio or just in Edit / Start Server?
Has it always happened on this setup (i.e. you just got the setup and it had this problem when you first played ROBLOX on it) or did it used to work on it?

Thanks for your reply Echo.

Here’s what I just did that seemed to work:

  • Uninstall my Nvidia drivers using DDU
  • Remove, clean and reinsert my 980ti
  • Download new drivers
  • Select ‘clean install’ in custom install settings
  • Restart

Now I’m getting a solid 60 FPS again. The world is at ease!
