Shadows are low quality (sharp, raster-y edges) when stacked with a surface in-between

It’s difficult to describe what I mean, so take a look at this screenshot:

(I’m using humanoids to make scenery objects case shadows - sue me)

Shadows that are beneath surfaces (i.e., those that would appear on the surface if shadows cast backward) seem to interfere with those on-top.

I guess it must have to do with how shadows are occluded by objects in the shadow map…
However, this only affects the softness of the shadow; the shadows are still the proper size and shape, so it seems like this might be fixable?
