As i mentioned before, i’m trying to do an office tycoon kind of game, where you can hire people to work for you, and you can get income for your office. However, during midway development, even after i found some scripts, it seems i found out that i’m not capable of doing the scripting part, as it turns out, i’m a beginner, and haven’t known much yet, but i’m much more capable of doing the building and designing parts however. Now comes the question…
Should i hire developers when i’m on a low budget?
Are volunteers still good for helping me in script designing?
If i am forced to go Solo, are there any good course lessons for me?
I’d recommend learning to script, or maybe use free models which dont have backdoors. Idk about spending your small budget but it’s your choice, it depends how much of a small budget. Lots of people do work for 1k, as that is considered small.
I’d say it’s dependent on your personal situation. What budget is a low budget? If someone would be willing to work for the amount and their work holds up then there’s no problem.
Same thing with volunteers, but the tricky thing is finding someone who shares your passion for the idea. If you can find someone who’s passionate and determined that’s going to work well.
If you’re forced to go solo don’t sweat it. It’s more of learning basic programming concepts and trying to apply them to Roblox. Google is your best friend. I find myself searching for “how to ___ roblox” all the time and browsing through the official docs.
Most developers require an upfront payment, but some will accept a percentage of the games total earnings on release. I would only recommend using a % as a method of payment though, if you are pretty certain your game will do well profit wise.
This really depends. Most of the time someone who is working for free, is not as talented as someone who charges a fee. However, you can strike a gold mine if someone skilled is really desperate for a project to work on. Do be weary of volunteers, however, because someone mistrustful can easily destroy your game or steal your assets if they are not a good person.
If you are going to try making a game, without knowing how to script very well prior, I recommend AlvinBlox’s YouTube Channel. He has many videos on various skills you need to script a game. Also make sure to visit the Roblox Developer Hub. Besides having a great API reference, it is packed full of great articles and resource.
If you do go this route, don’t be afraid to ask questions here on the forums, if you can’t seem to find an answer elsewhere.
I wish you the best of luck with your game, whichever option you choose! Make sure to persevere, even if you run into challenges.
Well said, however I disagree with recommending AlvinBlox’s Channel. A recent thread in roblox(s) development forum in reddit explains very well about the controversy towards watching his videos now. Some if not most of them are simply outdated
Yea most of his stuff are pretty old, and I don’t like his way of teaching. I recommend peasfactory only if you are completely new as he lays out the foundation pretty well but roblox has received a lot of updates that ruin his scripts mostly with roblox’s api.
I work with game revenue percentage, if the game doesn’t work out its a lost for everybody. And you have to make that clear in the beginning.
If you do happen to go Solo, you couldn’t be in a better site. There are tons of people here and topics that can help you answer most of your problems. I learned scripting this way. Overall, its very much so worth it to learn.
Volunteers on the other hand are suspicious a lot of the time and generally are riskier, however, right now is also a great time because people are bored and sometimes just want something to do.
if i am looking at the recruitment saying that you have a low budget, i won’t even take a look because developing is a hard process, i won’t do something without a paycheck. so i suggest you either learn the knowledge or get some money
Note: just my personal opinion.
No. A lot of developers want an upfront payment, a percentage of the game and possibly some other things, depending on the person. If you don’t have the budget for it, it’s better that you just save the robux and learn development yourself.
There are tons!
Developer hub. It has a lot of articles and videos for you to learn from.
Developer forum. While this may be a bit difficult to learn with, you can read some development questions and find the solutions and that may teach you some concepts. Not only that, there are a bunch of tutorials which can help you too.
Youtube videos. I personally prefer this method due to the fact I like having someone to talk to me and teach me, sort of what a teacher does. There a few youtubers I would recommend:
Alvinblox. He has a bunch of scripting tutorials and teaches you things like how to make your own admin commands, or a live event etc. He also has a beginner scripting series and is currently doing a advanced one.
Thedevking. He has a beginner, advanced and UI scripting series ready for you to watch. Not only that, he talks about certain issues that a lot of developers may face, like how to find other developers or is Roblox as good as other game engine studios.
Lua learning. It’s a game on roblox which has a lot of good tutorials and allows you to try out the concepts taught. Not only that, it has it’s own website filled with community tutorials which will teach you things like how to make a teleportation pad.
While some of his very old content may be outdated, I think that his newer content is very good for beginners. It is very easy to understand, even if you are watching from the viewpoint of knowing near to nothing. I think it’s not fair to judge his entire channel, just because some of his content isn’t up to date.
I think I’m going to answer no.
This is because whilst learning scripting, ui making and building etc. is possible… it takes a lot of time and effort and even then you might not even be able to know how to start with creating your game and keeping it in a lane so that you’re not spending your entire life into 1 game, not to mention you might not even have the drive to make this game anymore.
Furthermore, hiring developers on a low budget is a pretty bad idea. You probably won’t be able to find anyone and if by chance you do, you likely have no idea what you’re doing and your project is definitely against the odds all the while you’re underpaying the dev(s) who are working tirelessly because if it doesn’t work, oh well! They get nothing and dumped dozens of hours into your game only for you to walk away because in the end you only lost some of your time while they wasted paychecks, time and effort.
Your game concept can work but it’ll be hard.
You could hire a scripting buddy (you build, they script. split profits)
If you understand what you’re doing and know how to go about making a game then great! Save your money until you can afford it and take some courses in the meantime. hope this helped.
I would still not recommend AlvinBlox, because as I’m now repeating myself, the reddit thread provides a detailed argument against doing it. You should look into multiple scripting channels, DevKing is one good example.
Explicit bias is not my intention, and I’m highlighting my suggestion to other new scripters out there
The commenters are right, that AlvinBlox’s content can sometimes be misleading. I would, as @DigitalRock023 said, I would check out other YouTubers besides Alvin, just to make sure you are not being misinformed.
Here are some other options that helped me way back when I way first learning lua:
