Should i put Power-Ups in Crates or Shops? Also would they be one-time purchase?

Hello!

I’m not sure if this is the correct category for this sort of thing, but i’ll take a shot…
So i’m currently working on a game that pretty much “requires” power-ups for the game play diversity, but i’m not entirely sure on how should i go about giving them to players/limiting the usage of them.

I can’t decide weather i should make a store for them or just put them in a crate, so i need some extra opinion. And say i put them in a crate - would i remove it from the crate or just give them cash back if they get it once more, and this then raises a question - should it be a one time purchase, that would never run out - it would just spend “energy” or take up backpack space, so player can’t use everything, every time?

Another approach to this would be to buy the power-ups before every round, but since the game’s being built for pretty much all ages, my worry is that kids would waste the money, and wouldn’t plan ahead, and the game would be significantly harder and boring, without any power-ups, though a solution to this could be use the money as a limit, not an object, if you know what i mean… kind of like Car Crusher’s does it.

My current plan is i make them a one time purchase, and have like a “backpack” with limited space, and so better power-ups would require more space. This would limit the power-ups in match, but would allow you to switch the power ups out for other ones, as much as you like. Downside to this in my opinion is that weather it’s crates or shop - they would be acquired quickly making the game meaningless to them after a short time. And the backpack size isn’t all different from using your money to get the power-ups for the match, but not losing any money.

There are a lot of possibilities and i’d appreciate your opinion on this, so i can at least narrow it down.
If you read all this, thank you!

Are the players buying the power ups with robux or with in game currency? If robux, then you could go either way, but with currency, you should probably have a shop.

Currency. And if shop, then should it be one time purchase or when you run out - you buy more? On one hand if i make it one time, then they can use all types, but be limited to how many power-ups of a certain type they can use in one match. But on the other hand if they’re able to run out, player has to restock them, they could buy a ton of them and have to plan ahead little more, but then they’d have to keep buying them, giving a purpose of staying.

I could maybe kind of combine them. Have not like a store, but inventory with all of the power-ups, then you use your experience or money, to pick out what you’ll use.
I was kind of thinking of making a “deck” type situation.

Maybe make it where you can upgrade the power ups and only have one of each per game?

For these kind of power-ups, I’d recommend having 2 or 3 slots which players can equip them with, and when they’re unequipped they can just go into some sort of backpack. If you wanted, you could make a ‘single round’ purchase which is much cheaper than the permanent one. The single-round can be used once (for one round) and then disappear after.

Overall this gives the players more options on what they want to do, alongside with giving more sense of progress (by eventually unlocking all the power-ups until you add more) as they play the game longer.

(Also, if you wanted you could sell an extra power-up slot )

Yeah, i was going to have the slots.
So from what i gather from you is that… before the match, they could be taken into a window, where they can see everything they can use, so they can see everything right away, but just be limited to what they can take?
I kind of like this idea, but the problem is, if i do this on round start, there might be players who don’t pick anything while thinking, or, if i make it like a when everyone’s done thing, some might stall others on purpose. There has to be a better way to manage this type of system

Just make it so their choice is saved, and doesn’t change until they go back to the power-ups menu and take it off/swap it out

Well that’s the point!
But the question remains weather it’s one time purchase or would they buy it over and over again when they’d want to switch them out?! I guess if it’s the second one, then crate system is out of the question…
