What do you want to achieve?
I want to know if I should switch my current game core (zombies vs survivors) to something else, like players vs vampires.
What is the issue?
I’ve learned that the zombie loving side of Roblox isn’t so huge. Games that are far more developed that are just simple zombie vs humans have a max playerbase of 300-400 at a time. Besides that one zombie storymode game that won’t last for long.
What solutions have you thought of so far?
As said above, I’ve thought of turning the “zombies” portion into vampires. I’m open to other suggestions as well but zombies seems like it’s overused. I can’t see my game getting on the front page if it’s just another zombie vs human game.
I think the problem might have to do with gameplay. It’s been a while since I last played a “zombies vs humans” game, but from what I remember, in most of them zombies are either some stupid player-following AI, or are other players with the ability to infect human players on touch. Simply replacing “zombies” with “vampires” doesn’t sound like it’s gonna make much of a difference. Adding different concepts could help making it feel less overused. A few ideas off the top of my head:
Add different zombie tiers, ranging from dumb touch to be damaged/infected zombies, to smarter zombies with weapons, magic, vehicles, or all sorts of special abilities. Why not vampire zombies that can drain health?
Instead of just killing zombies, add the alternative of turning them back into humans (maybe a limited amount of times per zombie though, so the game doesn’t last forever)
Players who become infected can use zombies’ abilities
These ideas are probably not the most original, but I hope it helps.
I think zombie games are amazing if done right.
Take a look at Those Who Remain.
THE GAME DESIGN:
It’s built extremely well (Meshes are outstanding.)
The sound effects and music match the game play. It gives off a spooky but also intense vibe.
Game play isn’t too repetitive. The player unlocks different guns and specialties as they level up. On top of that, each round has optional objectives. (Players must walk near an NPC while trying to protect them, repair the truck, blow up the truck… My favorite objective… etc.)
ZOMBIES:
Zombies are designed extremely well. They do not walk into walls if a player is standing behind one, they do not glitch or lag. They walk around as if being controlled by a player. (Not really, just trying to point how how well they’re created/)
As the players progress their way to wave 15, different types of zombies spawn. I’m unaware their names, but I believe that there are roughly 6 different zombies ranging in strength, health, and speed.
The discord server for Those Who Remain has a channel dedicated to solving the lore of the game. This is optional as most people don’t spend too much time in that area, but I think it gives the game a nice touch. Almost as if it were a story game.
That’s just a few of the reasons I think it’s an amazing game. I think you should stick with zombies and try to wiggle some of the things that Those Who Remain did into your game. The most important, in my eyes, to: 1.) Have a well build map(s) and 2.) make sure that the zombies don’t glitch/lag through walls and look like real people. (If your game has NPC zombies)
Actually it’ll be more of non AI Zombies vs Humans. My game will have additional lore, multiple zombies to choose from that do different things, abilities/perks, gun skins, trading, etc.
To avoide being repetitive, I’m making multiple game modes. There’s the classic wait out the time but more such as repairing a boat/truck to escape, etc etc.
I’m not the best builder but my game has a theme going on, I’m unable to make my own meshes though.
