Yes, which is why I mentioned that the filter should definitely stay. I was thinking on making it more lightweight on filtering, not quite entirely removing it. Excellent point though.
Looks for other sites that have 18+ variants/requirements
adult site, adult side, adult site, oh, and adult site
If someone saw “ROBLOX 18+” I think they would get the wrong idea :/
Yeah I get that, so they’d have to call it something else, i.e. how I said Wizard101 called it “Open Chat”.
Support, sometimes even chatting 1 letter (such as “k”) gets filtered and in general it has gotten a tad bit too strict.
That is mostly to do with filtered word referencing or spelling out filtered words. Anyway you go there is barriers, ROBLOX probably won’t dive into this any time soon. I could see them raise the age from 13 to 14 if they update filtering again.
I think it should still sensor some more harsh terms/racial slurs, but I do agree that if Roblox want’s to appeal to the older audience then they should start being a bit more lenient on stuff like the filter system so it’s not censoring everything.
The filter at this point is filtering usernames. Whatever filter they are using, it def doesn’t seem to have a blacklist.
Yea I know, I can’t even search up most users because it hashtags them… like what the heck lol. With all the feedback they received you’d think they’d do a tad bit more to appeal to the general audience ¯_(ツ)_/¯
There needs to be some kind of change to the current filter they have. 50% of all chat and custom names/bios in my games are filtered and it’s ruining roleplay
you can turn off the filter in runescape, and rated M games (17+) like battlefield have no filter at all
I would love it if 18+ didn’t need to have a filter. I don’t think it would really help all too much with the problem of not being able to talk to fans, but at least it will help roblox start to appeal to an older crowd.
<13 → 18+, 18+ → <13, 18+ → 13+ obviously get filtered as usual. 13+ → 18+ and 18+ → 18+ need have no filter. The filter should check if the two players fall into one of those categories and return the original string.
As for a definition of “18+” which is probably sensitive even with roblox having no responsibility protecting children who lie about their age, a verified billing email still might not be enough.
IIRC when I did ToS review for one of my college courses, Twitter basically said “if someone lies about their age to sign up for our site it’s their own fault”, so potentially we would’t need to worry about fake ages. Then again, Twitter has a legal team that could put any individual in the mud to enforce that.
Filtering is necessary for 13+→18+ to prevent kids from revealing personal information.
I agree with you about 18+ → 18+.
The personal information concern is for <13 and not 13+, isn’t it?
So then why do they have a different filter?
COPPA is what regulates PII for children. It doesn’t apply to 13+, as Digital_Boy mentioned.
I think an 18+ filter would be absolutely amazing.
Since ROBLOX is USA based, it would likely follow the US rating of 18+ or 21+, whichever would be considered appropriate in legal eyes (21 is the legal age of an adult in some states.). However legal age may not have anything to do with what age can see what content. Typically ESRB rates games in North America with Teen, for 13+, and Mature, for 17+ (not 18).
I’m 19, and I want to play ROBLOX for years to come, but it’s getting a hell of a lot harder to communicate with friends who I know very well. We’ve had to communicate over alternative clients to avoid being filtered.
I think people over 18 are, obviously capable of controlling what they want to see. If you are old enough to understand what’s being said then I think you should be able to see it. Obviously I shouldn’t be able to tell someone to fuck off, but I should be able to communicate my own way given my age and experience, and anyone else of equal 18+ should be able to see that, and interpret it without reading a billion hashtags.
If kids lie about their age that’s their own fault, or their parents fault for not enforcing it. ROBLOX does not need to worry about kids who lie because they’re not responsible, however a 18+/17+ feature should not be mentioned on the home page when signing up, to prevent lying kiddos.
In my experience, as being over 18 myself I’ll use my real birth date on any website, so I don’t have to worry about accidentally coming across a filter, however when I was younger I definitely lied about my age to get away from any filtering issues, I’m not saying I should have, but I felt well within my right to do so; because my interests differed from the company interest, and that’s okay.
If a child decides to do this to themselves, it should be safely assumed that they’re doing it knowing they are bypassing a filter, because they feel responsible enough to see anything said, and nobody but themselves can be held accountable.
Hi! I know this topic is just about 10 days away from its 1st anniversary (355 days ago) compared to the last post and as all the important points have been discussed here, I just thought of reviving it, rather than creating the same topic again.
Reason being: I think this a great idea which I think shouldn’t be forsaken, but considered instead.
I am going to take a wild guess here and consider it a risk Roblox did not consider worth taking, but if it is simply forgotten then I would support this quite a bit.
