Since we need the filter, perhaps add a third level for 18+?

I don’t know how this would stand with ROBLOX’s current age group privacy things (I don’t recall what they’re called, but they’re like an ESRB rating), but since we do definitely need the filter, could users with a verified email and with an age >= 18 perhaps get a third, even more lightweight filter?

I feel like some of this filtering is too strict simply because you have to assume that the user is between the age group of 8-14 (Which makes sense), but if you look at games like Wizard101 they have an “Open Chat” which disregards their filter so long as the user proves they are over the age of 18 and has put in valid credit card information at least once.

Maybe ROBLOX could do something like that? I don’t know how you all would make it work.

COPPA?

From what I remember, if they child says they are over 18 then ROBLOX isn’t responsible for them being exposed to unfiltered chat. ( Just from the brief parts I read, I may most likely be entirely wrong )

Yeah I think that’s it.

Please.

Reputations though…

Not many people don’t lie about their age, and people are curious…

Parents could see all the bad language and think roblox as a whole must be bad…

Which is why I added “Validated e-mail” to that. Most kids don’t have their own e-mail, and if they do have one on their account, it’s usually their parents’ and they monitor their age and such.

A child 12 years old and a child 16 years old are still both legally minors when it comes to the law. Adding a cut off at 16 years old makes no sense because their parents can still represent them if they wanted to complain about foul language or something

Okay, so it should be 18 then. I’ll edit the post. I think I got 16 from a local law.

18+ accounts shouldn’t have filter, i agree

The other side of the coin is that the filter is in place to prevent kids from sharing personal information. An 18+ no-filter would work against this notion if you allowed everything incoming to become unfiltered

The people at roblox are smart and I’m sure they would also rather not have to implement a filter if they didnt have to. The reality is that they need to in order to do their part in protecting themselves and their users.

Yes, which is why I mentioned that the filter should definitely stay. I was thinking on making it more lightweight on filtering, not quite entirely removing it. Excellent point though.

Looks for other sites that have 18+ variants/requirements
adult site, adult side, adult site, oh, and adult site

If someone saw “ROBLOX 18+” I think they would get the wrong idea :/

Yeah I get that, so they’d have to call it something else, i.e. how I said Wizard101 called it “Open Chat”.

Support, sometimes even chatting 1 letter (such as “k”) gets filtered and in general it has gotten a tad bit too strict.

That is mostly to do with filtered word referencing or spelling out filtered words. Anyway you go there is barriers, ROBLOX probably won’t dive into this any time soon. I could see them raise the age from 13 to 14 if they update filtering again.

I think it should still sensor some more harsh terms/racial slurs, but I do agree that if Roblox want’s to appeal to the older audience then they should start being a bit more lenient on stuff like the filter system so it’s not censoring everything.

The filter at this point is filtering usernames. Whatever filter they are using, it def doesn’t seem to have a blacklist.

Yea I know, I can’t even search up most users because it hashtags them… like what the heck lol. With all the feedback they received you’d think they’d do a tad bit more to appeal to the general audience ¯_(ツ)_/¯

There needs to be some kind of change to the current filter they have. 50% of all chat and custom names/bios in my games are filtered and it’s ruining roleplay

you can turn off the filter in runescape, and rated M games (17+) like battlefield have no filter at all
