Small Canyon Map (Trying to go for classic feel)

We’ve been working on a small canyon map for the rogue and chaotic survival/combat/party game that me and some others have been working on.

It’s nowhere near the level of quality, that some people post here, but we’re going for a simplistic blocky style for the game anyway.

I’m not too convinced by how it looks, so am curious for suggestions of what can be changed, additions for the upper cliff portions to fill empty space or just ratings/opinions.

Thank you!

This small canyon map looks good! Nice job on it!

Wow I like it, I would suggest adding more detail to the main terrain. Kinda like steep steps how the style is still blocky but has a lot of detail!

Thank you! Trying to add some more details to the cliff terrain and add some stuff on top of it. It’s currently lacking as we only have cacti and a fossil ribcage up there, but open to hear what might be suitable!

As a unique style this looks fine, but if you’re trying to make the map look authentic to old Roblox versions, you should probably use studs a bit more sparingly. Since studs and inlets used to be able to join parts together if they were touching, builders generally only used the studs surface when it was needed and used it in conjunction with other surfaces like inlets. I suggest that you use studs on floors, inlets on ceilings, and smooth on walls. To give it some flavour, you can also use universal or weld surfaces on bushes and tree leaves since those were more generous with the surface types they could attach to.

If you take a look at classic maps like Happy Home, Crossroads, or some of the older Natural Disaster Survival maps, you can get a sense for how they utilize surfaces and replicate it in your builds.

That’s fair! It’s not intended to exactly mimic classic styles exactly, as me and the others involved are unsure on how much we want to use studs/inlet/universal etc etc. We’ve used other styles amongst our other maps which we’re more comfortable with.

General consenus is that if it meets the typical blocky style that you’d expect from anything prior to the modern Roblox era, that we’re ok with it.

Appreciate the feedback and will definitely consider it, as some of it definitely is heavy on the studs. Do you have any opinions on extra decoration to add to any ground / wall surfaces that still fit with the canyon theme??

Thank you!!

I think some low-lying foliage (bushes, small trees, etc.), especially near the water, would give it a more natural look. Loose rocks lying around on the ground could give it some variety too. You could also add some unevenness to the cliff face by adding bumpouts and dents to the walls.
