Smooth Terrain Heightmap/Colormap Importer Release!

I have some problem can’t save my place after importing this map.

Wow lots of rude comments in here. Nobody would blink an eye if the importer had this to begin with.
Thanks for bringing this feature to Roblox. It didn’t exist up until recently and moderating heightmaps seems pretty reasonable considering every other user created asset gets moderated.

At the very least my comment would exist regardless. Sure its nice. But as a developer who has worked off the platform there are better ways to handle things, yes even for a platform like Roblox. And moderating to avoid something that can happen regardless in such a way that punishes other users isn’t the way to go about it. Maybe you’re just super awesome and don’t have any issues. Unfortunately I’m not that awesome.:slightly_smiling_face:

Oh there would be comments anyways. We already have plugins that are much less limited than the system we have right now, even though the way they work is much more complicated, requiring you to convert the image data into a string.
The only reason the first comments were positive is because it offered both a much higher limit (around 12k I think) and a much easier workflow. Now it’s literally 5 hours of designing and the same amount of waiting. Might as well spend 5 minutes converting a 4096x4096 heightmap into a string than having to divide it into 16 1024x1024 images and waiting for approval.

Assuming no one would complain is very bold of you.
Heightmaps is a great feature but it’s ruined.
It’s not efficient. By not efficient I mean it’s too time consuming, I don’t think anyone wants to wait 2-3 hours because they wanna make a mountain in their game, some people make heightmaps and wanna try them out but no, they have to wait for it to be moderated so they can put it in their game and if the result is not what you wanted you’ll have to redo all the wait you did all over.

Basically, you’re better off using Heightmaster than waiting a long time for a mountain.

What are these hours of waiting comments talking about? My height maps approved in under 20 minutes.

I understand the power of larger images and no moderation. They are obvious. This is Roblox though. “Kid Safety” is on a spotlight.

You’re just wasting your time. I can read and saw that post above. What I’m getting at is these “Hours of waiting” posts are overly dramatic.

Back on the topic of the new importer. I’m having issues getting any assetID to work that has been approved. I should mention the image was approved very quickly just like any other decal.

Yup doing something wrong. You can’t just throw any asset ID you’ve already uploaded. You must upload through studio. Approved within 5-10 minutes.

Edit: Wow this works really well. I scaled a 1024x1024 image to about 6,000 x 6,000 for the import and it looked very accurate without it missing too many details. Time to import some fun stuff!

After several attempts I figured that any uploaded asset doesn’t work but for some reason I can’t seem to be able to import my file directly in studio: (it worked on the site)

Edit: Probably because my file is too huge in size.

The problem is that this method of “safety” is completely illogical and time consuming. Your standard seems to be 20 minutes. Multiple people here have stated that they have to constantly tweak their heightmap because it doesn’t end up looking exactly how they expected it to. That time adds up. Each ten minutes of waiting for every tweak can easily add up to being an hour or more of waiting.

It’s illogical because you can literally just click on the “Add” button in the terrain editor and immediately paint something inappropriate without having to worry about moderation (that is, until your game gets reported).

It is a cool feature and I’m glad that they added it, but the moderation modification is just plain silly.

Pretty sure viewing locally hosted files has nothing to do with kid safety.

I don’t understand why it bothers you that people are complaining about unnecessary extra work flow?

It’s not rude, it’s realistic and honest.

Work smarter, not harder.

The moderation requirement for heightmaps is a very unnecessary hurdle for this feature in particular.

One, there’s a heightmap importer plugin available that will allow local files of any size to be used, along with colors/materials, and is just as effective as the roblox-provided one.

Two, in conjunction with local files and whatnot, there is no safeguard to someone just loading the default terrain ‘baseplate’ and drawing inappropriate things with the brushes.

If you’re interested, I can DM you an image showing exactly why it’s completely pointless to moderate the heightmap importer. It doesn’t stop anyone from doing something inappropriate and punishes those of us who’d frequently use it. I’d personally prefer not to wait upwards of 20 minutes because I made a minor mistake that I couldn’t have noticed beforehand.

As much as I abhor the decision to moderate heightmaps, I can’t say I don’t understand why it was made.

Effective third party heightmap importing plugins are by definition not immediately accessible (you have to go searching for one, and the idea that one exists is not given to you by default within studio, so the thought to abuse it is less likely to happen).

By introducing an easy to use unmoderated importer, it would take seconds for kids to find and figure out they can import naughty images and create hundreds of games with inappropriate near-photorealistic pictures on the ground.

However, I absolutely will not be using this feature due to the moderation requirement. This has crippled efficient workflow and I won’t waste my time with it. I will find or make a plugin that does it in seconds rather than half hours.

Wow. This is a real step back. You had such a great feature but ruined it once again with your tedious, annoying, slow, and restrictive filter. You say you want 100 people companies developing on Roblox but what sort of company would see this development environment as efficient? Especially after the border patrol game was suspended for “recreating real-world places”, and after my personal experiences being ignored by customer service and devrel, it seems developers are receiving less and less freedom and support. Is this the reason why it was delayed, because there was no requirement for images to have passed moderation?

I understand why this was implemented, but at the same time I don’t exactly like it. I agree with the fact that waiting ~30 minutes to fix a mistake or add to your heightmap can be extremely tedious.

I’ll continue to enjoy this feature and use it for my projects but I hope the moderation improves so the images are able to be used much sooner.

How do you import stuff, I really want to try this.

How can I import that ? Where do you get asset IDs ? For example if I want to import San Francisco how can I do that ?

Where can I get Asset IDs and would I be able to import San Francisco for example ?
