Hail, Architects and Craftsmen of Society,
Today’s diary entry lays the cornerstone for one of Society’s central features: Building. I’m here to hammer out the details of transforming your settlements from a scattering of humble huts into a fortified tapestry of medieval might.
In Society, you start from scratch. Every building in your kingdom begins as a basic, ‘Primitive’ version. But as you gather resources and work together, you can build them up to their ‘Medieval’ version.
When you first start, your kingdom might already have some buildings, and they’re all pretty basic. To improve them, or to build new ones, you need resources like wood, stone, and iron. You’ll gather these resources and add them to your nation’s stockpile.
Equipped with your trusty hammer, as seen in the attachment, you’ll be able to see all the edifices that await your crafting prowess. The UI, though still a work in progress, will guide your hand, showing the structures ripe for construction within your realm.
Each building has a unique variable called “ConstructionClicks.” This variable determines how many times you must press “E” on the building prompt to bring the structure to life. No resources? No clicks. No building. But if you’ve got the goods in the nation stockpile, you yourself can bring that building to life, click by click. Once a structure completes, everyone who worked on that structure is rewarded experience and gold (that is taxed, of course).
But in Society, a building is more than its walls. A primitive barracks might have a huge army, but without the medieval upgrade, a weapon like Iron Swords will remain beyond your grasp. Each upgrade unlocks potential, improving the capabilities of your people and the power of your nation.
We’re trying to avoid mere modifiers; Buildings in Society mean business because they are interactive. Building a church is going to play a real role in gameplay, not just bump your stats.
With the foundation of Building now laid before you, our next entry will delve deep into the caverns of Mining—a lifeline for your burgeoning society. Stay tuned as we unearth the rich veins that will fuel your ascent to medieval majesty.
Until our next chapter, keep the hearth fires burning and the anvils ringing.
