Hi I was wondering if anyone knew any programs I could use to texture my meshes because coloring them with default colors and default textures wont do for what I’m trying to make.
I don’t own the money for photoshop so I’m looking for cheaper, or even free alternatives.
I cant find any professional software’s to use, I scoured the internet trying to find a good software that would eventually help me make good HD textures for meshes.
I know you said you can’t afford Photoshop but right now they have a deal for $10 a month for a photoshop and lightroom bundle. Also if you’re a student you can get a huge discount.
Pixaflux is also a great one. It’s free and extremely powerful and allows you to make PBR textures.
There are many free alternatives or paid programs to use for creating HD textures for whatever software you use, Blender as an example may be a good option for texturing or you could take the opportunity to learn texturing in Blender as it does have the capabilities to creating textures Gimp is a alternative to photoshop it may come in handy. As there are many “texture tutorials” with a quick search you will be provided with many results.
I typically don’t recommend getting photoshop since many free programs provide similar tools and do have the option to develop your own textures for your build or meshes. There are variety of more out there with a quick search you may find what your looking for including tutorials and a program to learn.
but honestly, so far i’ve been disappointed with it. While it’s texturing capablities are staggering, it has some strange UX bug that destroys a project and saves with the file (your 2D UV view can bug out and disappear entirely, can’t be recovered if you saved the file while in that state) - and the app doesn’t provide native version control (you gotta save multiple files manually).
It’s also really uncomfortable to “bake” textures into a single output (for Roblox) - you need to manually, painstakingly export everything into blender, and then bake it there… huge pain.
So while I can’t recommend a better alternative… I’d personally recommend against Substance Painter unless you manage to figure out some pipeline for it.
It’s a neat piece of software, and smart materials are awesome, but the Substance to Roblox workflow really sucks if you, like me, work with multiple “objects” that you want to bake down into one final map. Seems to be a long-outstanding problem with Substance (baking multiple objects to one texture).
Give it a whirl; maybe you’re eligible for a student copy. It makes really beautiful textures, really easily, but prepare for a lot of pain when it’s time to import them into Roblox.
I’ve also heard good things about ZBrush and ArmorPaint, but haven’t tried them.
