Something's off with my lowpoly city?

Heyo, I’m trying to throw together a map for a game idea I had by using assets I’ve commissioned over time. Everything looks fine except the city area, I can’t tell what’s wrong. Something just isn’t quite right. The buildings I used here were realistic designs that I’ve converted to lowpoly.

What might be wrong?

  • Color scheme - Maybe the colors are too dull? Maybe they’re too bright?
  • Level of detail - Maybe the part count of the buildings is too high?
  • Overthinking - Maybe I’m just overthinking it?

I mostly dabble around with scripting, and the times I have ventured into building I only focused on realistic designs. So I have no idea how proper lowploy should look.

What do you guys think?

the scales’ all wrong on the buildings, for some the door is just way too huge, and then you have buildings which look like 2 story buildings, but you can just jump to the roof without any effort

It all makes sense, converting from high poly to low poly isn’t as simple as it might look.

While your buildings don’t necessarily look bad, there is always room for improvement.
First of all, low poly is supposed to be more cartoony based, which makes using bright colors a must.

The color palette is a huge factor in how your low poly models are gonna look, i suggest you to use colors such as persimmon, light blue, light green and just make it mix and blend in with the environment.

In addition to that, lighting is the one of the if not the biggest X factor in low poly building, make sure to use the “Bloom, Blur & Color Correction Effect” in order to give your city that little magical touch.

I would recommend you to look at references as the buildings used don’t really match the style you’re going for. You can start by changing the black windows as they ruin the whole look.

Try to look at some references, and the color palette used in games such as Adopt Me, simulators etc… It would help a ton.

Thank you for your feedback! I didn’t realize lowpoly was so complicated.

Well, it actually isn’t. It’s just way different than realistic building as it has it’s own components and tricks.

For instance, when going for a low poly build you aren’t supposed to pay attention to details as much as you normally would when making a realistic building, however you’d need to compensate that by adding that little smooth cartoony touch that just changes the whole vibe of the building.

Once again, i would strongly recommend you checking Adopt Me’s style of build if you want to get started in low poly building. Other than that, i appreciate the effort you put into the city. Carry On !
