So today I have made a game and been working on it throught, I just did a “big” map expansion but there is an area of the extension which seems too empty, here it is:
I do not want to add walls around the place or barrels and crates, so I ask you what could I add to this area of space?
The problem with that is that I would have to resize the models and resizing the map in general is going to lower the map size which is at ky current ideal size which I do not want at all. I just want something to fill this space.
Maybe try adding roads(I know it doesn’t fit in with the original map but it works) or some sort of pathway connecter, it won’t make much difference when moving but it will help fill in the gaps that are there.
Could do a crater or a mini forest type thing? even the most simple thing can make a big difference so maybe just some tall grass or rubble of an old building
Correct me if I’m wrong, but this seems to be a game about sniping?
Empty spaces are significant for snipers; no cover means easy kills.
You should consider this when you design your map; use empty spaces to present “high risk high reward” paths for players, like crossing into the opposing team’s “area”.
To make them feel less empty, you could add random “non cover” assets (i.e. things that aren’t quite big enough to really work as cover) to make the area more noisy.
But this map is really flat. You could add some terrain to break it up, like a shallow ditch in the blank space (not deep/steep enough to provide cover, just enough to be noticeable as a terrain feature.
Does expanding the map improve the player experience?
Why am I increasing the player space?
My Opinion: At this state it doesn’t matter what you add.
Your map has no actual flow, at the moment. It’s a plane scattered with very light cover. It’s not that the space seems “too empty” there is no design or structure to it. It feels like a baseplate with items on top thrown together for a quick play demo or greybox.
Try drawing out a map on pen and paper, add elements as cover, points of interests and choke points to make the design tangible.
What you should add: Play Space that highlight your mechanics.
If it’s a sniper game, add height and barriers
If it’s a shotgun game, add choke points and lots of areas to hold
If it’s a lmg game, add varied angles to hold
If it’s all of the above, add all of the above.
Whatever you intend to add should benefit the player experience.
The way that the cover seems to interact with the space in the middle looks to me like it would be perfect for some kind of building or base looking area for the player to camp out in. If you want an idea for what might go perfectly here, take some inspiration from my own model which I used for this same purpose: https://www.roblox.com/library/4805062015/4-Way-Ruin
It would be a good idea to add just about anything that matches your setting and style. It will naturally reduce the empty spaces and corners, if you plan on adding other different objects around the map area. Adding elevation and areas with small hills will not make it empty and flat.
If you don’t have a idea on what to add down try incorporating small details without cluttering certain areas. It will look good in my opinion adding details here and there that matches the style, perhaps view reference images of the things your trying to build as it would help gathering small additional ideas from.
After all, you could take these suggestions however you like; always look at images that feature around your theme.
try resizing the map to make it smaller so that it doesn’t look as spacious. You can also try adding some small hills in the ground as well so that it looks more realistic and less spacious and flat. You can also add some trees.
as you can see it does not look as flat cause there is an elevation with the ground adding some volume if that makes sense and another thing in the Picture the Cover things are bigger than yours so it makes the map look more Filled. and also in the game, the cover systems are not to close and are thicker than thin
Like in this picture I believe they are too far from each other. Like if you made them thicker and a bit more close to each other i think it would look better.
That is all, I hope I made sense and helped you a little bit.
