Story Game, how big should the servers be?

In my time as a developer the amount of players per server, while maintaining a descent server without lag, really depends on the game itself and the mechanics. For example when one of my previous games, I was able to manage 30+ players per server with different maps that’d load into the game having over 2,500 parts per map. I’ll keep this simple and short.

For a story mode game, where I want 20-40 players, is it doable when comparing it to the average story mode game? I have this grand game idea but I don’t want to reveal it just so It’s not taken.

Key concepts I’m worried about:

  • Map Size
  • Large objects moving (Size: Small Car - Medium sized building)
  • The occasional battle here and there
  • Map(s) exploration

Anything helps, or if more information is needed please let me know!

Story games are not story games without 80% of people leaving the game at the very start, so maybe you can fit 20 players greatly, there won`t be many players after 3 mins anyways…

But you may have issues with the lobbies, where 80% of the players are also AFK or walk around pointlessly, so make sure to place a bigger timer for the lobbies, and don`t make many of them i guess
