Studio Auto-creates places without my input

Not sure if this is intended or not, but this change affects my workflow negatively enough that I felt the need to provide my feedback

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Roblox Studio version 420
  2. When on the landing page, click on any of the game templates
  3. Clicking on a template will auto create a new place under your name

This started happening sometime after yesterday night.

If this change is intended, I’d like to make the case that this change is a bit intrusive. I do not always want to submit new assets under my name when I open up Roblox Studio. Creating a new asset under my name is similar to sending a chat message on my behalf (without any warning!) – it does not allow me, the user, to filter what I post online. Not to mention my account is personally responsible for any asset I submit to the website (in the case of Report Abuse)

I do not wish to have people see how often or when I open a new studio file. My typical workflow consists of opening blank new studio files opposed to opening an existing place from file or a published asset (especially true when working with Plugins since working on plugins locally right now is barely supported as a first class usecase)

Please do not create new assets for me under my name without my consent.

Hey GollyGreg,

The problem seems to be around uploading assets, not necessarily creating a place, correct?

This is a new feature we are working on, but I’d like to know more about your workflow so we can find the problem. This should not be on yet, because we haven’t made an announcement. Apologies for the confusion, I’ll follow up on getting this turned off in the morning.

Ctrl+N will create a new place like it always has which is great.
The issue is that this actually will also create a new Place Asset on the website which is not so great.

I’ll often open new place files maybe 5-10+ times a Studio session to either work on a local plugin (because plugin hot reloading does not work unless you reopen a place, this is not so great on its own and Im sure is on the radar to make this process less painful) or simply to type something in the command bar (since we do not have access to a studio environment from the OS command line to test simple rbx-lua(u) lines)

There are other cases that warrant using a new, blank file (but probably does not warrant creating a new public place asset on the website) such as opening the Animation editor, importing meshes, or just testing some small asset like textures or particle effects in a sandboxed studio environment

I hope auto-publishing will remain optional. My account is already filled with blank baseplates that have been created a few years ago automatically. Please don’t do that again.

Given my workflow, I never, ever want Studio to upload new places anywhere without my explicit consent.

This feature is just generating garbage. Even if these places are supposed to get automatically archived they’re still in my archive, and they’re still useless wasted places I don’t care to see. I will not be able to find places I could actually care about in my archive because this feature will generate hundreds of pointless baseplates for me.

My current workflow involves opening Studio upwards of 8 times daily, and 7/8 of those times it’s just to open a baseplate to test or check the behavior of something while working on external assets, planning projects, helping others, etc. Why create and upload a new place at all when a huge amount of the time I click on that template tile on the homescreen, it’s to do something I literally only intend to throw away?

We hear you! The feature should not be back in its Beta state, apologies for the confusion. We will be looking at solutions to the problems brought up in this thread.

Thanks!
