Studio frequently crashes seconds after Play Testing

image

After starting a playtest inside this mode, my studio will have about a 1/4 chance of crashing, or have an even larger crash-rate. I use Windows OS.

These are my system specs:

The bug is not place-specific as this can happen anywhere.
I don’t recall the exact date for when this issue started happening, but the folder containing all dump files has had multiple modified files a day starting since the 27th of July.

Happening with me as well. Will give my machine’s specs later.

It can happen with these actions:

Entering (or leaving) a playtest.
Switching between server and client view during playtest.
Switching active windows (only in some cases, mostly lua plugins)
Interacting with plugins.

It seems to happen completely random and with no chance, sometimes it’s constant, sometimes it takes a while.

When the crash occurs, roblox studio freezes and becomes unresponsive, cpu usage drops to 0.1%, and the only way to close studio is to force-close it using task manager or another task managing program.

It seems to happen only in certain machines. My old machine doesn’t have any issues, but my newer one has.

This has been happening to me for years now, I don’t think it has anything to do with any recent changes. About 1/50 times that I click the “Play” test button my studio instantly closes and my work is gone. This has led to me having to “Save to Roblox” every time before I test play just in case studio terminates itself out of nowhere.

I am running on MacOS so this is not Windows specific either.

Hi Maxx_J

Is the place you are attempting to playtest very large? Does the same crash rate occur if you attempt to playtest an empty Baseplate?

Place size doesn’t seem to define the crash chance, at least in my machine. I can crash while entering a playtest in a baseplate.

Once I saw your question I opened studio via my desktop and it crashed, I tried to open again and it crashed again, my third attempt to open studio was successful and I managed to start a test to answer your question.

I’ve consecutively playtested little above 20 times on an empty baseplate and - it hasn’t crashed any of those times.

Afterwards I went through various places of mine containing consecutively larger amounts of instances.

The first in my series of crashes after playtesting occurred at place id: 3426681095 . I’ve provided a place id instead of a game link as to not cause any ambiguity (due to the game being linked to several places)

I then went back to see if places with less instances would crash - I shortly approached my 2nd crash after playtesting this place for the first time today:
https://www.roblox.com/games/5443078040/Exploration

Afterwards I went to this place - it crashed after playtesting it for the 2nd time: https://www.roblox.com/games/4797123181/UIWork-Slasher

I ultimately went back to create a new place that’s also a completely empty baseplate, no code or any other assets involved. It crashed upon playtesting for the first time.

After that crash I tried testing another empty baseplate again and it crashed after playtesting it 3 times.

From the looks of my tests, it doesn’t seem that scale has any role in crash-rates. A place link to the last empty baseplate can’t be provided as I created the place without publishing it to the website.

I tested an empty baseplate once more after that and managed to get a crash after my 2nd playtest:

This does not appear after majority of the crashes I went through

Hmm, it’s interesting that even just opening Studio or playtesting once on an empty baseplate is causing a crash. We aren’t receiving reports of crashes this frequently so my hunch is this is something specific with your Studio app or your machine…

Have you tried uninstalling / reinstalling Studio? Have you noticed other crashes or performance issues with any other applications on your machine? Otherwise I will pass along the DMP with your system specs and let you know if we find anything.

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled studio and it still crashes after playtesting on an empty baseplate.

I haven’t noticed any trouble or performance issues with any other applications on my machine.

Seems like I’m experiencing a completely different bug then. I never get the Roblox Crash message. Studio simply hangs up forever.

The same thing has been happening to me lately too. Although for me, I think the freezes only occur after I stop a play test. I don’t get the crash message either - studio just freezes up forever.

Hi, the link to the .DMP file seems to be not valid?

i have same graphic card and it also happens to me

I seem to be having the same bug, not my graphics driver, is it maybe an item in roblox studio that involves this crash?

I’m also experiencing these crashes (with “An unexpected error occured and Roblox needs to quit” popup 100% of the time) ever since I bought a new laptop a few months after this thread went inactive.

It gets to a point where it can crash every time I try to playtest consecutively. I’ve also experienced crashes on Studio without going into playtesting as well as on the client. I tried multiple solutions to fix it, reached out to Roblox Support about it with no luck, and even wrote a thread on it.

Here are my specs:

Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz 2.42 GHz
Installed RAM 12.0 GB (11.7 GB usable)
Product ID 00325-97233-31051-AAOEM
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

I never remembered a time where Studio crashed so many times on my older device.

Having the same issue! Need immediate help!

Happens to me too my specs are

Ryzen 5 4000 series
8GB Ram
GTX 1650 4GB

It was randomly freezing at first after recent update and seems to be in connection with direct3D11 render. But then it stopped now it just freezes 100% when I try interacting with a pickup item for my inventory system. It only freezes in studio but in game it works. I created an empty project and as I was placing parts I got a message that it needed it close. Roblox studio has completely become unusable all in just one update for me. I was working on my game for 4 months and now I have to find something else to do with my time as I cannot dev like this and im only getting pre made response from Roblox looks like my dev journey is over because im just a small person

robloxstudio_crash

It’s not my project it’s just Studio in general. It will crash or just get hung up forever. Sometimes it shows this message sometimes it just hangs.

Same thing happening to me, its making it super hard to create a game because everytime i test it, there is a 50/50 chance I crash

This may not help your case but, I was having the same issue. I uninstalled and reinstalled studio, again this may not help but it worked for me.

I have a similar issue, except it seems to only happen in one game. Upon attempting to playtest, it immediately crashes with no errors or warnings, closing the window immediately.

This is the place that causes a crash on Studio for some reason. All other places do not crash however, local-stored or cloud-stored. This place doesn’t crash on the player though, so I dunno what’s happening here.

Does any roblox employees or experienced developers know what’s causing this similar crash?
