Sorry I think I wasn’t as clear as I wanted to be. Cancellation and termination are different:
Cancellation: If a user cancels their subscription, they do not get a refund because they will get their benefits that they paid for until the end of the month (they just don’t get charged for a renewal). In this case the developer receives the payout at the end of the month.
Termination: A user cannot opt to do this themselves, it happens automatically if the user’s request for a refund is granted (e.g. successfully disputing the charge with their bank). The subscription then automatically expires instead of on the original end of the billing cycle.
There’s a tradeoff between how much risk you want to take in terms of people taking advantage of benefits for some period of time for free (but you’ll know who those users are based on their history) vs. attracting good users with highly appealing benefits.
Nothing about the subscriptions article indicates a 30% cut being removed from the base price twice. This section points out that desktop users will only see their 30% reduced to 15% after a few months, not that mobile users are getting hit with a 30% + 30% cut.
It works on mobile though. BUT, my sub is $2.99/m. On mobile Roblox says $3.99/m but when you go to pay, it says €4.99/m. That’s ~$5.5 for a $2.99 sub that gives us less than a dollar.
Why is this real money? It’d be awesome if the developers could choose to get paid out in robux OR the real money, but you’re taking the real money > converting it to robux > and then giving it to the dev after all the normal fees? what’s the point.
I can only imagine the customer support nightmares of kids thinking theyre purchasing a one time item > subscription runs for a month or two > and the card holder complains to Robox’s CS team for a refund
While some people complain about corporate greed that is the subscription system, it is basically a requirement for all platform nowadays. I mean yeah, it is very greedy, but it should have replaced the products-act-like-subscriptions shenanigans that some developers have worked around with.
All of these developers who decided to build money printing machines already done far worse things than adding subscriptions. But like i said a lot of times, everything comes back to the developer’s cut although that’s besides the point.
The problem with this system is that it requires you to pay with real-world currency, and not in a way that most devs are complaining. There is already a subscription based system - private servers. Why not just apply it to products? I am talking as a guy who don’t have robux nor any revenue from this platform (hence i am not complaining about that i can’t spend robux i have) and cancels all subscriptions as soon as i paid for them, but i would rather buy robux, and then spend this currency on subscriptions. If roblox really want to push real-world currency subscriptions, they need to encourage either developers by giving them money directly (unrealistic for roblox) or by increasing their cut (more realistic), or by allowing players to choose between robux and real-world currency payment options and give them a discount if they choose to pay with real money.
I get it why roblox wants real-world currency, it allows to sneakily take money from cards using Apple / Google pay (which is what every company is doing) rather than from a very limited robux “wallet”. But tbh at this point roblox needs to get rid off robux and go the way Steam did back in the day.
… but like i said a lot of times, everything comes back to money …
As expected, noone wants to pay for subscriptions because they cost $, you were directly told this wouldn’t work and yet Robux is not a valid payment type, learn to listen to developers.
I feel like Roblox just wants to earn even more money and remove Robux. First ads, now this. Every update having to do with purchases is just “oh hi we are removing robux pls use usd so we can earn money thanks”. Meanwhile we are getting trash updates in general. I expected this to be robux purchases (like 199/month for a VIP subscription) but no. PeOpLe (not even players anymore, just like we dont have games anymore) now need to own a fu- excuse me, flipping credit card to do anything.
If robux ever get removed, I will drop off this platform so quick. Not very fond of how roblox is trying to push subscriptions on everyone despite the backlash and criticism.
It would be nice to allow players to directly cancel their subscription from within the experience, to be completely transparent and direct with players about the subscription. Is it planned to add API for this eventually, so that it would be possible to add a cancel button for a subscription within an experience?
Why is subscribing with Robux, not an option? With automatic renewal, it should work with any currency, real-world or virtual. Via the real-world currency, the bank would deny the transaction if there is not enough money to cover the monthly subscription. This model can also be implemented in ROBLOX with Robux. In fact, you guys have already done this with private servers. Enable purchasing a subscription via Robux would not only cover all the locations you already cover with private servers but also improve monetization and encourage developers to engage in subscriptions.
Well, this might be a nice idea. However, why can not I set the price? Why can not I choose the payment method and currency? Will you make a new update?
In my opinion, you should make a new update because of these.
