Sunsetting Sets

What functionality benefit was there to sets (for sky-boxes for example) when compared to a trello list with a bunch of asset links?
(I only used sets once the year they came out to check out the feature and never again)

I remember how valuable these were to me waaaay back then when I was starting out with roblox studio, though sadly as time passed they moved more and more to the dark corners of roblox where almost everyone forgot about them. Its time for it to relieve it from its saddness.

R.I.P.

I personally do not like the decision.

My set (https://www.roblox.com/my/sets.aspx?id=1544537) is meant to exist so its easier to locate meshes.

Sadly, the adding to set feature got removed. I can’t add anything.

People who abuse tags have bigger advantage.

…have I mentioned the search has worst algorithm? If I type in a word, sometimes model won’t appear at all. I’d love to have my models easier to find.

They were planning on releasing Packages in the 3rd quarter, though, and that got delayed. Perhaps, they planned to remove Sets just before the original release of Packages and then once Packages got delayed they had no incentive to keeping Sets around longer as you can’t add assets to them and haven’t been able to for years.

The use of a Trello board, while it is functional, is not ideal as it requires an additional service to be operational and functional. Even though Trello is almost never offline, Trello is meant to be a project management system and is not traditionally used for asset ID storage.

Also, I’m pretty sure he meant that he used sets to give other users an easily accessible place to see a bunch of different skyboxes. I don’t think he meant he was using endpoints in his game to access the skybox IDs (although he could have). I don’t think players want to find the Trello board, click each card, click the link, and then see the skybox, then repeat until they find one that fits their game.

edit: oops I forgot I could have edited my last post

Ooof, I must have been one of very few who still used sets. There are a couple handy skybox sets I’ll be archiving now.

This change fortunately doesn’t effect me as I stopped using Sets a few years ago, assuming this would happen, despite liking their behaviour.

I’ve been using a workaround to get something similar, I use the fact that group models exist to my advantage and uploaded the assets I needed there.

This is a smart idea! I might start doing this

tmw you’ve been doing 100% of your building with sets since 2012

Well this is irritating. Sets are a great way to organize huge amounts of assets that I use pretty regularly, I’d much rather this useful feature be brought up to current standards rather than removed entirely.

I used to use Sets until an update broke them sometime around 2013 - which was a bad move in my opinion.

Sad to see this leaving, but I suppose it’s a good thing since it’s now a dead feature.

Rest in peace, sets. I always wondered when they were going to remove sets considering no one ever used them.

Roadmap:

So does this mean Packages will be a replacement for Sets? If so. I’m gonna be super happy.

There is a temporary solution, as PeteyK473 posted above, you can just make a group and publish all assets there, and it’d work at least until Packages are out if you require the current Set system to build things.

Wouldn’t the upcoming packages feature allow for a similar functionality?

The functionality is that you don’t have to open the trello board and click on every link to get the model. With sets, you can go on the toolbox and just select the set you want and all of the model in the set will show.

I don’t think packages are intended to replace sets. Packages will just be models which you can update without having to re-import, I believe.

Its “soft” killing is to blame for the low hits in analytics, being a practical example how you could no longer interact with them at all using the website (no links, no buttons, nothing - correct me if I am wrong). It didn’t get hits in the analytics because nobody knew they even existed to begin with.

It is weird why cutting reasonably working features has become the norm here once they go ““outdated””. I understand the security reasons behind them, but it is comparable to demolishing a stable building just because it looks “old” instead of reforming it and giving it new strengths and looks.

Why not give it a facelift, improve their functionality and announce that they exist instead? There is already existing code that can be improved and resources which can be reviewed.

If the platform ever needs the feature again after it is removed, money, time and assets will have to be spent all over again writing the exact same thing the platform had years ago from scratch.

(Groups page is waiting for a facelift too…)

No, the button to create and add stuff to settings disappearing one day and engineers just not adding it back is to blame for the low hits in analytics. I’m wondering if they knew that you legitimately could not do anything with sets for years?
