Sunsetting Studio support for Windows 7 and 8.1

The reason people still use windows 7 and 8.1 is because they want to keep using it to keep the nostalgia even tho its non existent and yes Vinegar and windows 11 pro can be good options for older hardware.

I believe they also keep these for hardware optimization, due to the fact they are way less laggy, rather than newer versions, especially Windows 11.

They are pushing consumers though to buy the latest version, as they are more expensive, especially when they first came out.

Vinegar is fine as long as you don’t need the UI docking to work at all or to be able to move the camera inside studio properly.

It is a nightmare when it comes to this

As long as this leads to new features and better implementation of studios tools (which I’m sure eventually will be true), I think this is well worth the trade-off that a handful of users have to finally upgrade their OS. An even better step arguably would be to sunset some older mobile devices/platforms that limit what’s viable for widespread compatibility. However, I can understand the implications of this are probably far wider reaching than simply limiting studio compatibility.

I thoroughly agree with this, I’m pretty sure that W7/8.1 are EOL anyway and no longer supported for most development software because of a lack of security updates

the only way to play your games is a buggy excuse of a client called “sober” which saying runs the game is a stretch in my experience

I have Debian and for some reason, Sober won’t open and it doesn’t give out any output. You can still playtest your game though, and I play Roblox with mobile, so if needed, I can just join with my phone .

sober works good for me, but its a experimental project so ofc you’re going to have issues with it.

its 2025 and even with the steam deck (steam deck uses SteamOS, which is a linux distro) and the millions of people switching to linux because microsoft likes to put bloatware and spyware (recall is a great example of windows spyware) in windows 11 (windows 10 support is ending this year btw) roblox still won’t make a native linux client.

The main reason Roblox doesnt have a native Linux client probably comes down to priorities. Most of their users are still on Windows and macOS so they focus their resources there. Developing and supporting a Linux version would take extra work and with Linux having a smaller user base it is just not at the top of their list. Plus Roblox relies on some tech that is harder to make work on Linux and even tho tools like Wine and Proton help a native client could still lead to performance or other issues. Right now it looks like they are sticking to what works for the biggest part of the userbase.

unfortunately i think the only type of unix/unix-like OS that will have roblox support is macOS (even tho roblox is literally A MULTIBILLION company)

I know but i think that if they give the same care for linux that they give to macOS linux would be the best os for roblox studio,

yes i agree, i currently use roblox studio with vinegar (wine) and its kinda glitchy.

well since roblox won’t make a linux version, atleast sober (custom roblox community-made client for linux) and vinegar (roblox studio community-made linux client, which uses wine for running windows programs) work fine for me. but i had to use proton (a wine fork, which is focused on gaming) to get better performance and to fix the studio camera.

Well look at the bright side since linux market share is increasing at some point roblox will be forced to make a client for the best roblox studio experience but as for now wine and proton would be your best choice .

yes, it is growing really fast. the linux marketshare used to be 1% in 2020 and now its 4%! hopefully steam deck or steamOS and the end of support for windows 10 will boost the amount of linux users.

valve is planning to release their linux distro (steamOS) to computers and laptops, i hope that will make people switch to linux

And this will make Linux even better because its main downside is app support and I hope if this happens other apps follow Roblox too.
