I am trying to use the surface tool on a union, is it possible?

Could you please provide more details on what your exactly trying to achieve? Why are you using surface tools in the first place? Which specific surface tool are you using?
Go into the properties of the union then change the surface to studs. You will have to change each side individually. It won’t physically show the studs if you want the studs to visually appear you will need to separate the union into individual pieces then add the studs using the surface tool. You could also use a texture to achieve that effect. But I would advise against using surface tools because Roblox is removing them. Feel free to check this as solved if I answered your question.
