Terrain as a backdrop

So I have a ski resort. I’m trying to make mountains in the background, but unsure what would be the best method to do so. (I’m in the process of painting the rest of the terrain). Right now it looks really bland as shown in the image:

I’ve tried using a skybox but none really fit what I’m trying to do. I’ve generated my terrain via Hightmap. Any help?

Use the add tool to make the mountains general shape and then use grow to make it smooth.

I would say:
• First increase the lighting because at the far back the mountains I see have dark colour.

• Make the terrain a little more smoother at the area where you have the resort and the skii thing etc. (The Main Area)

• The Mountain on the left (The Step Hilled One) make it’s terrain smooth such as it matches the other mountains, it is looking odd one out of the other mountains.

Otherwise rest is all good

The black is a rendering issue.

I’ve already done that.

That is a peak. Its supposed to be this steep. I’m looking for how to make new mountains, not editing the current ones.

Hmm… I guess then for the background you should make tall high mountains with a snow but a little rocks, so that it looks like a natural mountain area edited by the resort construction etc. Or Humans whatever.

I know that, but the question I’m asking is how?

Okay I will get some tutorial for you, but of course Terrain Editor, you make grow a main land smoothen it from the top all the way to the bottom. From top very very smooth, from bottom very very wide. And once that is done add snow to it.

Here are a few tutorials.

Thanks, I’ll try that. It might be hard to smoothen it out but ill attempt it

While it is impossible to not have an edge of the map, you can illuminate the effect of an infinite terrain. Here is a video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gUy-xCx_L4&t=14s .

I believe that was the real solution you were looking for.

No need to apologise, we were both just trying to help ^^!

I personally use a part that has a SpecialMesh with a platform made out of bumps (mountains), as a backdrop.

:point_right: It’s easy to customize the mountains and isn’t bad for performance.

Model if you want to use this:
