Terrain Map Tips

I am planning on making a decently large map that will be terrain rather than parts. I just had a few questions since this will be the first time working with terrain.

  1. Is terrain generally laggy, especially at a larger scale? This map won’t be massive, but big enough where it takes several minutes to walk/run across it.

  2. What’s the best and most efficient way to optimize it?

  3. Am I limited to the build in terrain tool? Is this capable of creating fairly realistic worlds?

  4. Any tips/ideas that may help me?

Thank you!

  1. The terrain can cause performance problems if it is very large, try not to make it very irregular, I recommend you lower the quality of the studio, press Alt + S, go to rendering and lower the edit quality level to 1, the other you can go testing the levels to see which lag its less (if you lower it too much, your game will look very bad)
  2. As I said not so irregular and a processing between level 2 and 8, if you want to make it precise, you can use the Part-to-terrain plugin
  3. I would need to know if it is a flat terrain or with mountains or structures with terrain
TIP: If you put too much water together it can lag a little

Irregular is perfect sometimes, not everything has to look normal. Terrain doesn’t really cause performance issues, how come my brother can run Jailbreak on his Kindle Fire which has a huge performance issue, and can barely even play any games. Jailbreak’s map is all in fact made out of terrain and buildings, and other things.

If you do not have experience doing this because your tag next to your name says programmer so if I were you I would get a builder.

Yes, you can create a lot of terrain, I was referring to having to use the plugin for example, a maximum part is 2048-2048 (including mountains) apart that is very considerable even almost the size of the jailbreak I think, I meant if you exed that you had to change the quality of the studio a bit
