So, I’ve been working on this mining sim for longer than I’d like to admit, and will probably take as long to finish the rest. I’m looking for some feedback on it:
- Mainly about the game’s feel: is it fun? Is progression balanced? Are the mechanics interesting?
- Additionally, on optimization as a whole: how does it run on your device? Are there any FPS drops?
- Finally, suggestions for the game are always welcome!
It’s a lot like Mining Simulator, unfortunately.
Mining Simulator mechanics
So you got a pickaxe and you gotta mine some ores with it to sell them. You can buy better pickaxes with earnt money, as well as backpacks for storing mined ores.
I dunno how to explain it any better man
What’s different
- Added chest-digging mechanics, which are definitely not being taken advantage of at their fullest, so suggestions for them would be highly appreciated.
- There’s a skill tree, which, as its name implies, lets you ‘learn’ skills, such as critical hits (for some reason).
- Ore variants…
Tutorial
I see myself in the need of including a tutorial since the game doesn’t have one of its own yet, and it isn’t that intuitive
How to play
To mine
First, equip the “ToolPickaxe” tool; then, look out for ‘colorful blocks’ spawning in the surface. Once you found one, start clicking on it. This will start mining the ore, but be careful: don’t let the white, vertical bar run out, since, if it does, it will reset your mining progress. To avoid that, simply click again before the bar runs out: this will reset it for you to click again.
Once the horizontal bar fills to its max, you will ‘attack’ the ore (i.e. deal damage to its health, storing < damagedealt > ore in your backpack)
To sell
Simply click the “Sell” button on the UI, or enter the ‘cylinder’ in front of the “Sell” establishment.
To buy
Enter the “Shop” establishment ‘cylinder’: this will open an UI, in which you can select what tool you want to then buy the desired variant.
To find chests
You’re gonna need a detector (obtainable via the shop).
First, with the “ToolDetector” tool equipped, you’re going to hold click down. This will start updating the before “Deactivated” label, which will now display how close you are to the chest: the lower the number, the closer you are.
If it displays “Nothing”, it means your detector isn’t finding any chests within its range; if it displays “Right here”, it means that the chest is close enough for you to equip your shovel and start digging
It is a bit wonky right now, though.
To dig chests
With the “ToolShovel” tool equipped (like the detector mentioned above: obtainable via the shop), you’re gonna hold click down when you think you’re in the digging range of a chest.
To actually know if you’re digging a chest, you have to look out for a bar that only appears if you’re actually digging a chest, displaying your digging progress
Every time the bar fills up, you deal < shovelpower > damage to the chests health; and, when you finally get its health down to zero, the chest will appear on the surface for you to pick up with a single click.
Inventory
It displays the pickaxes, sacks (A.K.A. backpacks), shovels and detectors that you’ve bought, allowing you to equip whichever one you want.
It also includes what ores you currently have in your backpack, along with how much of them.
To open chests
Normally, you can open chests in their respective inventory section by clicking on them and then activating the “Open” button in the menu.
However, if instead of seeing “Open”, the button reads “Unlock”, it means that the chest requires a < oreappearingbelowchestname > key, which can be obtained by entering the “Forge” ‘cylinder’, opening an UI that displays your ores, and lets you smelt them down to keys.
To use golems
These are my game’s variant to pets, which, as you might’ve guessed, multiply your stats.
You can get them by entering the ‘Crystal cave’ ‘cylinder’, which will open an UI displaying all possible golems you could get by buying with cryoshards (obtainable via opening chests).
When you have one, you’ll need to activate it with 3 of its respective ore (e.g. a Diamond Golem requires 3 diamonds to be activated), and once its activated, you can finally equip it to enjoy its money multiplier.
If you’re interested, look out for easter eggs, as there are a few of them.
Look for tooltips: some of them may be helpful.
I do plan to add more features that differentiate it from the rest of slop.
UI is a placeholder at the moment, and the bounds are be a little… off, to say the least.
If I didn’t explain something properly, tell me so I can clear any questions.
Keep in mind this is my first game, and it isn’t close to being done by any means; so don’t go too hard on it.
TL;DR:
- General feedback on (tragically generic) mining game.
- Similar to Mining Simulator, although with some small differences.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my post.
