It was bad enough that Roblox’s archaic chat system often left notifications up even when I had clearly already opened a message far too often, but now Roblox has just decided to put this weird star thing beside it, that will definitely not go away no matter what.
But that’s not the worst part. The worst part? They decided to put the star on your browser’s tab, as well
Oh god. Please, roblox, you didn’t even update the chat, you can’t add MORE to a system that hasn’t been improved in a decade. Please free me from this accursed star-icon-notification-thing!
Presumably summoned when receiving a chat message, or… something.
though no means known to man has been able to make it go away.

It’s forcing me write more here but like. Seriously, why was this added to begin with? Chat is too old to tape on a facelift like this, and I don’t even understand what it’s supposed to signify.
Is it actually a new message? Well… no, because I read all my messages.
Is it something else? Well… no, because there is no indication the icon means anything, anywhere.
To get rid of it, just open the chat that is unread (or the chat that has no messages in) and type. You don’t need to send anything, just start typing. It should disappear in a few seconds.
This bug has been around since the chat system got added, Roblox never bothered to actually fix it entirely
(it used to be that you had to actually send a message to mark a chat as read, which ended up with a catch 22 of being forced to chat back and forth, a notification tennis in a way, but at some point it got changed so that you had to simply “acknowledge” it by typing a reply, not necessarily sending it)
This is how getting rid of it used to work but it hasn’t as of now worked to get rid of the star for me.
Though it was never consistent regardless. I remember previously having to try that method a few times to get it to work. They really did just add a new spam notification method to the world’s most broken chat system.
Today it just randomly marked all of my messages as unread. Not just recent messages, no. EVERY chat I’ve EVER been part of, all the way back to SEVEN YEARS AGO in 2017. Literal HUNDREDS of chats marked unread for no reason, super annoying.
We’re still waiting and also I made a bug report about a similar issue when the messages are not appearing correctly, I gave more informations and examples about texting with friends.
