The Strategy Game Genre: Dead or Plausible?

I love strategy games. Whether it is micromanaging an army in an RTS, or balancing my economy in a turn-based game, it has always been my favorite genre of game and likely will be for the years to come.

Now that I have learned a good amount of Luau, I think I am ready to attempt making a strategy game of my own. However, I don’t worry that kids would not be attracted to a genre like this, I just simply fear that if not executed and designed correctly, nobody would play this game.

So, I have turned to this great community once more, in order to decide two things; what genre of strategy should I consider using, and what theme. Here is some of the stuff that would be great if you could keep it in mind:

  • Be sure the theme is appropriate. While I don’t see anything that could be considered inappropriate as a theme, if a parent of a 9-yr old were to walk into a room and see their kid playing this game, how would they react?
  • Try to make sure that the theme is passible to make into a game where you could build buildings and troop to attack. Neighborhood is good for buildings, but it begins coming to a loss when we get into unit types.

Thanks for reading!

Your goal here is to get it out to a more mature audience in Roblox. You’re actually in luck, Roblox has a humongous adult/older teenager community now, if your game is quality, and you successfully market it to groups, especially relevant groups, you’ll get your visits.

In my opinion a well made fun strategy game could attract a lot of players, including kids. A turn-based strategy in roblox would be probably hard to create, so RTS games are more popular. Still, I haven’t seen too many of these, so I guess if you can make one, it will probably succeed. Good luck!

I have been working on an RTS game for a few years, now (it’s been on and off), and I can give you this one piece of advice: Roblox is not very supportive towards strategy games. (It’s certainly achievable, but Roblox won’t have a lot to give you.)

A lot of Roblox’s services are based off the assumption that you will be using Roblox avatars, whether it be 1st or 3rd person. Consequently, when you decide to make a strategy game, you have to make a lot more features for your game from scratch. (A prime example for me is a custom pathfinding system, which took a considerably long and painful amount of time to both create and understand.)

In your situation, you seem only partial to the real-time aspect of strategy games. I would strongly recommend that your game be turn-based instead of real-time. Speaking from experience, this will save you a boat-load of work.

Good luck, by the way!
