I reserve the right to turn down any box I don’t see fitting to be apart of the space (I will always provide reasoning why I am turning down an office space.)

The problem was that EchoReaper never brought it back. The OP should have probably asked EchoReaper before starting a new one.
The main problem I see with this is that this project could die the same way the first one did - one person running the approval process. I may talk to EchoReaper about resuming this, but not having a screening process (and just blacklist developers who need to fix their code). It would probably require having developers make ModuleScripts that load the office when it starts.
Like Nexus said, because the other one is dead and I was bored.
Mine is like a shanty town temporary version of the real thing anyways. If Echo, or anyone else higher up the food chain came along and wanted to restart the old Office back up again, I’d drop mine in a heartbeat, but until then, I’d like to give everybody a 25x25x15 box for fun.
By making the offices smaller, theoretically I could jam more in without affecting uber amounts of lag. I mean, if you head over to my office building right now, you’ll notice though, I made it so all the offices are blacked out, and if you find the office on the first floor with my name, and touch the door, it spawns in. It won’t despawn, I didn’t go as far as coding that, but I figure it’d cut down on lag to only load in the offices being used. Of course, someone could theoretically come in and spawn them all.
Before this gets a bunch of offices submitted, please don’t make the same performance mistake the last place made. Make sure that scripts submitted can only be ran if the player is in the office. The DevForum offices were performance hell.
I like the good amount of self depreciation OP has.
I think trying to collab with @EchoReaper to basically redo the offices is the best route or at the very least consulting him (i.e What mistakes were made + do you mind if I steal your idea?), then doing your own thing. I would be interested with what he has to say on this.
The reason the old offices were never brought back was because they didn’t have a purpose. We only had 3 floors used out of the thousands of members we have, and the offices weren’t even being checked out often. They’re a gimmick that users want to make an office for and then forget about after a few weeks. These new offices will face the same problem.
The goal was to give them a purpose both so we’d have a lot more participation from forum members and see more visits from non-members. I.e. voting system, allow people to contract work through the offices, etc, but even that doesn’t seem like it’d result in that much of an increase in use. If anyone is able to invent something’ that will attract usage, I’m more than happy to revitalize them.
Bit of a harsh way to put it but you’re right. I’d like to think that as a dev I would like to lazily put together a nice looking office for no reason whatsoever, but that’s just me. Imo the DevForum offices will never have a real purpose. People can put a portfolio together and post in in the respective category.
To me (prior to making it to the DevForum) the offices were this whole cool thing where you could see some of the top level Roblox designers showcase their art style into a nice neat little room. I think the thing that killed the offices off the most was the inability for a developer to edit their office easily. That’s why I came up with my little system that’ll import the office in when called upon. It cuts down on lag and means the office can be updated by the developer anytime. I think if people looked at the offices in the same way groups look at Group Recruiting Plaza, as a place to congregate to find people, it’d be more populated for sure.
Huge feature I think could help would be if users could come to the office and more or less post up requests to a notice board and the DevForum members could feel free to take up on those requests as they wish. Admittedly some trolling would be on the board but don’t let the few bad apples rot the whole tree.
The building is pretty massive and I’m doubtful many people will actually apply for a room so take your time as you wish. Right now I have over 100 offices available.
I think it was simply a creative outlet for devforum members. I enjoyed showing my friends my office and checking out some of the skill levels of other members. I don’t think the offices need a purpose and even if the number of people who applied did not fill the many floors built into the original office space, you could just shrink the entire structure.
That was used by… less than 50 people. Creative outlet is fine, but one that’s rarely used is a waste. We should have a creative outlet that hundreds of people from our community want to use. The current offices are not this.
Understandable. But other than that, all we have is sharing our progress on projects via the forum itself. I guess we should find a more inclusive creative activity for active members.
