So the part of the map that I started working on first is the west-side of the city. The west-side of the city is going to be run-down, and be home to the WestSide Grime Crew (similar to a gang). I’m a new dev and I don’t have that much experience with building, any tips, advice or criticism (don’t be afraid to hurt my feelings lol)
I honestly didn’t even notice the crack going through the wall and window. Thanks for pointing that out! And I’ll definitely be adding details to the street I’m trying to get the buildings out the way first
Your map does look like a rough city. However, I think that you should add more things on the road. Maybe some garbage lying around, some tiny holes or even a truck crashed into a building! (nobody can ride the truck though)
The mini details you put into the build is what makes it good. I would recommend making the rooftop of the houses different. Maybe add chimneys? Second floor? Helicopter pad?
So far your build looks pretty good, here are a few thing’s I think that need to be changed/added.
• Make the roof tops different, maybe even add chimneys w/ smoke
• Add vegetation
• Tipped over street lamps
• Broken wire fences
• More random pieces of garbage
And many more!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me!
I wish you the best of luck.
I just wanted to add a reply and congratulate you on achieving such a great standard. Well done to you. Your build looks great and I congratulate you on such a great looking city. I think that you are achieving a good uniformed style in your build and it looks very good. Well done to you.
The city is currently looking good so far! I notice the little details you put into it, which is often missed by most people. Things like trash cans, cardboard, cracks, etc. However, there are things which I believe can be improved.
Add variety to the buildings
This is the thing that I noticed the most, where the roof style, doors, and windows are the exact same things. The only thing changed is maybe the shape of the building, and the color. Try to add different windows, different types of doors, and experiment with different doors. This should maybe help the city be a bit more city like.
Be more consistent with the window/door sizes (considering they are the same)
At first glance, everything looks to be fine, a simple city with a bunch of more run down buildings. However, looking at the 3rd screenshot, I notice the huge difference between the window/door sizes in the purplish-gray building compared to the white building. Try to have a standard size for the windows and doors, just to be more consistent.
Add more things to the streets
When looking a the streets, all you can really see are the road and the grass next to the road. Try to add more stuff to the streets. Things like lampposts, benches, trash cans, traffic lights, things you would see in a more dense area. But also if you are adding those things, I feel you should make some damaged, as it is going to be run down.
There are more minor things that I noticed, which might not be as important but I just notice them.
Add pillars to the (I believe to be) bridge
In the last image, you can see something crossing the channel to the other side. It appears to be very thin, which is very unrealistic. Thus, you should make it thicker (adds more structure) and add supporting pillars. This is just to make the bridge seem more, bridge like.
Make the chain-link fence go down to the ground instead of a gap
If you look in google images and at chain link fences, you can see that there is no gap in the stationary chain-link fences, with very small ones if they are intended to be moved. Maybe remove the gap, or make the gap extremely small.
Make the water not so bright green (and transparent)
The water is really, really green which probably breaks 50 environmental laws. It just doesn’t fit in, as no water is that green unless you maybe spilled a ton of uranium or something. Maybe make the water more dull color, with a little brown to make it look dirty, and less transparent to establish that there is a lot of questionable stuff in it.
Well, those are what I believe can be improved… Very lengthy and looks pretty intimidating. However, really good job on making the city look normal and somewhat detailed, considering this is from you, who claims you are not very experienced. I hope you might consider these suggestions in order to improve your city. You don’t have to do all of these, after all it is your game and you can do whatever you want in it.
Add more depth(Some of your decals look like graffiti instead of real mud,it needs more 3d objects, for example the mud on the buildings like in immage 2,3 and 4 should have more wideness,so they look like getting out the walls If you know what i’m talking about)
I think it looks really well-made, and I’m definitely getting good run-down/grunge vibes from it.
However, just some constructive criticism:
Your doors and windows are somewhat disproportionate. Assuming that you’re scaling models to give size variation, I would recommend having a preset doorframe/windows that you add onto the building after you adjust its size.
The windows could use some variety. I’m working on a similar project, and I noticed that adding small details to windows to not make them look repetitive (such as AC units, boarded windows, and cracks) makes the builds look a lot more hand-made rather than mass-produced. Example from one of my smaller “learning” projects in early November; notice how the windows have different “accessories” to make them different from one-another.
I always wanted to make this type of cities for the game that i was making time ago I canceled. What im trying to say is that your city is incredible! 10/10
The only thing I can think of that hasn’t been stated already is about the grass color. If you are going for a run-down look, I suggest making the grass brown or a duller green. It looks like the residents spent all their time fixing up their yards rather than their buildings, lol. Also, I suggest adding more atmosphere, like fog, or maybe some particles. Good luck on your build, you’re off to a great start!
