Hello! I hope you all have been having a peaceful summer.
Today, I want to come on this forum to confirm the existence of a certain project Cyrus (@ArcticKibby) and I have been working on for a good while: Yes, Tornado Insanity is returning and will receive a full-on remake.
Timeline
This project started back in late March, and was initially going to be a remaster of Tornado Insanity, a game that I made all the way back in 2019, which was also a remake of the first iteration of TI I made in 2016 (lots of layers). This remaster would have kept all of its content, such as gamemodes, maps, disasters, etc., with the addition of a code rewrite, QOL changes, and new features. However, upon reaching the halfway mark, I didn’t feel too excited to finish development. I wanted to make something new and fresh, not re-iterate the same game with the same content from all those years ago.
The project came at a turning point in late April, when I decided to scrap what I made and resort to making a full remake instead, with the help of Cyrus. Thanks to her, development has gone by quickly, and we have a build of the game that we’re comfortable with, but not ready for the public’s eye yet.
Release Window
Development is going smoothly, and the game’s current build is around 75% complete of what we anticipate for the game on release date. We are aiming for a FALL 2026 release, meaning that the game can release as soon as in September or as late as in December.
This window gives us a reasonable amount of time to finish up the game for release, but be it known that it’s not a final release window. If a delay is needed, then we will make it known to you all as soon as possible. As a good philosophical statement when it comes to game development, “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.”
Beta and Full Release
The release of the remake will be handled similarly to how it was handled for Disaster Warning. This means that there will be a BETA release and a FULL release. Beta comes first with the game’s release, and later on, full release will follow in the form of a content update.
Beta release will contain a handful of gamemodes and maps, about 3x more than what was offered for Disaster Warning upon release (5 maps, 5 disasters). The game’s core features, such as the shop, settings, and more, will be available. However, some content and features won’t be present as they’re being saved for full release.
For example, Game Controls for private servers won’t be available on beta release, but will be added with full release.
After about a month, if the game’s in a good state, then we will fully release the game. Full release will be launched as a content update, which will contain the missing features from beta, as well as new content and major balancing changes as needed.
And yes, there will be post-release content updates.
Frequently-Asked Questions
A full-on remake sounds like a lot, so I hope this section at least answers some of the questions you may have.
1) What’s so new that warrants a remake?
Everything, and I mean everything. Not only with the addition of new features, but all returning content has been remade from the ground up. Here are a few things that we have changed:
-The UI is a lot more sleek and consistent.
-Rounds are much quicker thanks to a faster and compact intermission system, as well as the ability to vote to skip roleplay messages.
-Tornadoes have been rewritten to damage structures based on the sturdiness of structures (example: a brick structure would take less damage compared to a wooden structure, whereas ice structures can break more easily)
-Tornadoes and other side-disasters do not insta-kill, and it’s much easier to recover thanks to the addition of invincibility frames.
-Tornado move-sets are no longer limited to directions. They can now free-roam, and the travel speed of the tornado is based on the distance being traveled.
-With the help of Cyrus, all maps will be remade for this game! Some maps may also use their variant from Disaster Warning with some tweaks made to them.
-A fully-fleshed settings feature that can save changes automatically.
-An overhauled shop system with new shop items AND an inventory system!
-POST-PROCESSING!!
And that’s not even all of the changes and new things coming to this remake that you can look forward to! More will be announced soon on our social media platforms.
2) Will all the content from Tornado Insanity return?
Not all content, sadly. There are some maps and gamemodes that were purely filler content and wouldn’t make sense to bring back in a remake. We will try to work to bring back as much as we can, even revamping them to be fit for a remake like this, but I don’t want to make any false promises.
3) Will my data from Tornado Insanity or Disaster Warning transfer over to this game?
No. But we may include milestone rewards from those games if you are a new player. Let’s say you have 1,000 survivals from Tornado Insanity and you play this remake for the first time. Your data won’t transfer over, BUT you may receive a bonus for having existing data from that game.
The same rhetoric also applies to gamepasses. While we may grant compensation for buying gamepasses from the original game, Disaster Warning gamepasses do not transfer over. Tornado Insanity and Disaster Warning are two different games.
Data from Disaster Warning: Classic or Tornado Insanity Retro do not grant milestone rewards.
4) Will the remake have different lore?
Yes, and we are excited to share it with you soon.
5) Can I pet a dog in this remake?
…no? But thanks for the idea!
6) Is BLITZ and Disaster Warning: Reload cancelled?
No, but they will be put on the back burner as we work on this game. Both have been pushed to a 2027 release. This year is focused on Tornado Insanity.
7) I have a question that isn’t included in the FAQ
Cyrus and I plan to answer questions throughout the week regarding the remake, Disaster Warning, and more in the OFFLINE Q&A, happening on our community page. Check our socials for more details.
Conclusion
I hope you all are excited as we are for this remake. I consider this remake to be the magnum opus of my development career thus far, and once you see it, you will understand why. Be sure to stay tuned on our socials for more details about the remake, as well as video presentations that will showcase what’s to come!
