So I like to engage in a small game I like to call “hypothetical gameplay features with the ToS quiz” with some of my friends. We were throwing some hypothetical questions around until one of us asked a pretty interesting question - Can you reward someone in a Roblox game based on their non-monetized (user didn’t pay anything) activity on a 3rd party site (like Discord for example)?
What I mean by this is simple. Here’s an example: A user wins 1st place in a game night in a Discord server. The reward for it is some currency/cosmetic in a Roblox game. Can the game developers do this?
The question stuck with me for a bit and even tried doing some research on my own but unfortunately the ToS seems to be too vague to really answer that. What makes answering this difficult is that you essentially are locking out the under 13 users from participating and that within itself has a section in the ToS (I’m just unsure if it’d be applicable here). The closest I can get is “yes as long as it’s not a monetized activity” so I am turning to the wider audience that maybe has experimented with it in the past. I’d love to figure out somewhat of an answer to this one as I feel like this question will bug me for a longer while.
I have talked with a few star creators towards something similar with robux. The answer to that was you can only give away robux that is off site. What I mean by off site is if you are hosting a tournament on youtube let’s say, you can only giveaway a robux card. Another thing you should know is that you are not allowed to collect user’s information.
Assuming this goes towards robux I believe you aren’t allowed to giveaway in-game items. I AM NOT 100% SURE THOUGH!
I personally don’t think that this has anything in similarity to Robux sweepstakes as no money is involved in this. I am talking about non-monetized activity meaning that people don’t pay anything to win and prize certainly would not be robux cards as those giveaways simply turn into a begfest for people.
Pretty sure we’ve held discord community costume contests with Robloxian High School’s avatar creator feature, where winners would get a unique title in game. No money involved obviously. Not sure if we were breaking the rules when we did, but we weren’t told no by any Roblox staff we’re in contact with.
This doesn’t mean we were safe of course… but I can’t imagine doing Roblox game community fun would be breaking the rules. No money was passed, and excluding anyone not on Discord is not our problem, just like anyone not on Twitter not getting Twitter codes is not our problem
Thanks for trying to clear that up! What I was trying to point out is I believe roblox doesn’t like people making contests that are on site in general. Especially if it is a virtual item players can purchase with robux in your game. Again I am not 100% on this and could just be saying something unrelated I am not aware of, but that is just my take. Hope you figure out a solution!
Edit: If it is just for fun and no money is involved, I would assume you are fine.
