The game that I am trying to make is set in a dark, edgy, snowy environment, and I would like the lighting to reflect this. However, when I try to make lighting that can match this type of feeling, I always end up with a mish-mash of a bunch of different bland grays and overwhelming fog, which always looks flat and boring because it blends in with the snow.
Does anyone know a good way to achieve this type of lighting (especially during the day time) without making my game look awful?
I would personally get the bleakness from the ambient lighting and then just use white for the snowy lighting. Only ever darken the lighting, do not actually shift the saturation of the white or you get the greyness that you talked about. You could also use atmospheres for a dingy gradient or a fog perhaps. If your day time could still be a cloudy day then I would use bleak cloud cover and a snowy skybox to achieve your look.
Unfortunately I am not a lighting designer, so take this with a massive grain of salt, and please get someone-who-knows-100%-what-they’re-talking-about’s opinion as well
Good luck with the setting and send a pic of your game’s atmospheric results when completed
