UGC Catalog is Now Live!

What really bothers me in this regard is that Roblox had absolutely no problem giving Star Creators, who mostly just source their UGC ‘creations’ from an aspiring artist and not themselves, early access to the program over actual UGC Creators, who are still begging to get into the program without an answer as to how they even apply.

The amount of legitimate UGC creators currently getting snubbed out of making hundreds, if not thousands of dollars from their creations is extremely disheartening to see at this point.

I agree with this. This is going to economically destroy faces, limited and non limited. Should be addressed ASAP.

My personal opinion: YouTubers shouldn’t be part of the UGC program. They already make revenue off of their videos and multitude of followers.

I think that’s some what of an unfair statement to make. I personally don’t see anything wrong with giving access to a Star Creator member who actually knows how to use a 3D modeling program, and is able to create their own assets. It’s when you start to get the members who literally outsource their UGC access to non-whitelisted members that I start to scratch my head.

The Roblox video stars are treated like first-class citizens by Roblox, so I’m not suprised that they get to be part of the program.

I personally think as stated above, Star Program members SHOULD not have access to this program. Almost 90% of them don’t even know how to model so why give it to them? They already get enough perks.

Those UGC spots should be given to people who actually have SKILL in these areas, not to youtubers who will get someone to do it for them.

Like honestly… why? They already make enough money, no reason to give them more.

If they are able to ACTUALLY model on their own then by all means give them UGC, but ever since youtubers got access to the program the amount of stolen models and other incidents (cough gold parrot cough) has gone up.

Please, remove UGC from youtubers and give it to people who can actually use it.

UGC members should not have access to the UGC program? I think you meant star creators

I’ve seen many things, tho I rarely browse the UGC catalog.

Some stuffs seems to be handmade and that’s good.
Then I see all those items making use of recent ‘trend’ with ridiculous prices.

Sure you gotta earn your bread but… man, 150 robux for X or Y items that will prob be weared for 1 week ?

Not gonna mention all those recoloring … I mean, for wings - for example.
The current ones I’m wearing ; I’ve seen 8 versions of it, all just recolored.

Pretty sure roblox encourage hand-made creations and self-retexture.
If it’s just a question of “if you modify one pixel its ok” then yeah, let’s watch this UGC be flooded with high competition over pricing : 5 robux !

Can’t wait for this already abused system to be open to the public.

With the amount of UGC creators being very limited, it’s easy to make a low-quality hat and gain a substantial amount of money from it. Once UGC is open to the public, the amount of Robux earned from a single item will drop. Significantly. That’s why there’s spammed recolors & low-quality hats.

Yet you can’t even delete assets you upload yourself like like shirts, pants, models and decals.

Cool makes sense. Thanks ROBLOX.

If “150” robux is a “ridiculous” price for you then lol.

I think retextures of their own items is a good thing since it just widens the variety of outfits you could create. People like different colours and will want items in different colours.

Besides the whole youtubers should not have UGC thing, I personally am excited to see R15 animations as UGC as I am pretty good at animation.

Yeah, going over what many people have said about UGC creators creating a certain item and making about 10 other variants of colours it isn’t really something good and possibly another type of system could be introduced if they really wanted different colours, otherwise a possible limitation on variants on a certain item would be a possible idea.

Onto the topic of opening to the public, I think that if the rules of the amount of variants and low quality of certain assets continues I really don’t see the future of UGC successful and will be highly abused. It’s good that it isn’t already released the public and ROBLOX is able to work on certain things before a public release. I also don’t mean to sound depressing of some sort but would releasing UGC to the OPEN PUBLIC be a good idea? Maybe certain requirements would be a good idea otherwise the system could highly get abused with third party programs possible like the develop-library section.

Sorry if this is somewhat confusing but I just wanted to state somethings from my point of view, thanks!

Is anyone going to discuss the fact that someone STOLE work and got into the UGC Program? Thankfully this was caught like just today/yesterday but this should be a thing to work on. If one person can do this, whos to say someone else wont?

If its open to thousands, hundreds of thousands and millions of players, instances like this will be hard to catch unless a system is put in place.

This is a trial period; Roblox’s catalog team are learning and constantly improving the program.

I never stated that this will happen nor did I state that this was open to everyone. I said If its open to everyone and a system is not in place this will become a huge problem.

However, I will agree that Roblox’s team is probably trying to improve this catalog daily.

I’ve seen a video on it and its really scummy, especially since this person is “borrowing” designs from other talented creators who put a lot of thought and effort into their art.

This is a 3D Model ‘jimbledoods’ made on Sketchfab, over a year ago:

And here’s the UGC item that blatantly copied the model’s hat, uploaded in May of this year:

This is just one example. It’s extremely disrespectful to artists to steal their designs, and pass it off as your own, not only in Roblox, but in many other forms of art, as well.

Its really tough to see this, as an artist myself trying to get into the program, working hard, creating original meshes, and executing designs. To see someone just steal other peoples work to get into the program so easily is quite a bummer. There are much more deserving artists than this guy.

Outsourcing Assets
With UGC many months old, I will try to present the rising issue of creators outsourcing their work to other people and perhaps even purchasing them. I will try to portray where the issues may be happening.

Star Creators
I will try to portray both sides of the argument while writing this.

Why them having UGC access is a bad idea

This is where most of the Roblox creators stand currently in my opinion. As most of them do not have UGC access and probably won’t for a while. Star creators having UGC access is a stupid decision by Roblox as most (all?) creators will end up outsourcing the work to someone else to create them accessories to then (presumably) take a portion or perhaps all of the profit. This is basically making an item in someone’s likeness to then have that item be sold under their name. Being given credit in the description is already but seems a bit lackluster when you could’ve just made the item with your name on the creator tag.

In general, UGC creators don’t actually create their own items and therefore should not have access to the UGC program as they don’t personally bring any new items themselves. They are stealing the UGC spots that talented creators do not have access too and that they portray a bad image to Roblox developers as the it shows the incompetency of Roblox allowing some items to go through. (cough parrot)

Why them having UGC access is ok

The reason here why I believe Star creators should have UGC access is because they are able to “create” items for their fans. Star creators are able to bring a lot of traffic to Roblox and to specific games, having them is certainly a great asset to Roblox as they help to keep it relevant on video platforms such as Youtube and Twitch. While them uploading assets created by others it allows them to shine a light onto that developer and bring them traffic and perhaps help them get a UGC spot.

The reason why they should be allowed UGC access is because they have created not a tangible item but a persona that many fans enjoy and keep them playing on Roblox. The hats created in their name are based off their persona and fans would much rather have a item that they know their favorite creator is behind.

Personally, my opinion of this has changed but I’d rather have Star creators outsource their work to others and then give a large portion of that income to the asset creator. It helps to prevent some “bird” situation and allows fans to purchase an item from their favorite creator that is of high quality.

Asset Marketplaces
This is a whole different situation from the Star Creator discussion as many Roblox players do not have any connection to creators often. It is just a developer creates an item and the consumer uses it. There is no emotional connection most of the time. Consumers disregard where the item actually came from, the developer could be lazy and outsource the work to Unity/Blender marketplace where they are able to get premade items.

I will try to create 2 arguments for the use of an asset marketplace but it just boils down to Roblox not having UGC applications or any public UGC information for people looking to get in.

Roblox purchasing Unity Assets

Roblox has dabbled in the Unity market. As the bestselling package (bundle) the Magma Fiend was obtained via an outside deal from the Unity Marketplace. Unity // Roblox I do hope they were paid appropriately (%) as I can assume that bundle has made thousands of dollars for Roblox. Unity’s TOS 3.5 states in short that Roblox is not allowed to resell assets off the Unity Marketplace unless the creators agrees in a agreement outside Unity.

Why you shouldn't use an Asset Marketplace

Many creators make it onto the scene by being recognized by an admin or UGC member. It’s a game of chance as there really isn’t a way to get in currently.

But why you shouldn’t use an asset marketplace is because when creators make it onto the scene, they usually come and bring a genre or a new concept onto the market. You may have fans waiting on the newest asset you make based off the original genre which got you noticed. By then betraying the niche you end up having to compete with others with unfamiliar assets or assets that do not work with Roblox characters. If you want to share your passion for a theme, don’t bother using the assets created by others.

Why you can use an Asset Marketplace

Using an asset marketplace is theoretically printing money, you are able to purchase assets and then resell them. By doing this you can create accessories easily while waiting on your expose video. If you think you can purchase them and post them, once/if those Unity creators do get onto Roblox, you will 100% lose the legal battle as you must agree with the creator that you will be reselling their asset(s). They might even seek legal repercussions, so I’d advise not to, unless you have permission.

Fix?
The only logical fix to this is when the UGC is widely available, you will perhaps have a wave of experienced 3D modelers coming to Roblox to create accessories. The same ones creating assets on Unity will hopefully be creating assets on Roblox. Removing the middleman and perhaps bringing new creators in. Until then, non UGC developers will be there waiting for a UGC creator to slip up.

Final notes:
As a creator you should be able to either make something that 1. Gives you a livelihood and 2. You are proud of.
And I do wonder how much the creator of the Magma Fiend got as Roblox had supposedly made a deal with them on reselling their asset.

150 robux is a ridiculous price for what most of those items are.
The current UGC uploaders are taking advantage of their current ability to upload before everyone - monopolizing the market.

As for retextures, yeah, it’s cool, but no.
Imagine paying a total of 1’000 robux (6$) just to get every single colorized item of your favorite X accessory ?
