Introduction
Being a member state of the United Nations comes with some benefits and resources which include international funding, legal advice, conflict resolution and peacekeeping operations. Our 4 primary departments give countries the opportunity to solicit advice, funding and operational support.
- Department of Peace Operations - The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) provides political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping operations around the world and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to the conflict in the implementation of Security Council mandates. The DPO is led by the Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping and they should be contacted if a state needs support in keeping the peace.
- Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs - The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) plays a central role in United Nations efforts to prevent and resolve deadly conflict around the world. DPPA focuses primarily on five areas in international peace and security: ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace and enhancing partnerships. The DPPA is led by the Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs and they should be contacted if tensions are rising between 2 member states. The UN will always encourage, promote and do its best to reach a peaceful resolution, but situations sometimes arise where ultimatums are sent and the UN cannot advise a government on how to govern their country.
- International Monetary Fund - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization that works to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty. Member states can request funding from the IMF and it will be approved or denied based on factors that include their commitment to the UN, the time they’ve spent being a member and amount needed. The IMF is led by the Under Secretary-General for the International Monerary Fund.
- Office of Legal Affairs - The Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) is the office in charge of the International Court of Justice along with its President. A member state can request advice from the Under Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and legal counsel with regards to legal affairs, human rights and other topics.
