[Update] Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

omg finally. we can use our audio in public games without extreme requirements

and yet again false hope. I cannot believe they get back to that message with “if you pay a 3rd party, you can hear your audio in other games”.

We just want to be able to play our audio in other people’s games without the excessive requirement of them having the audio asset in their inventory or them on your friends list.

Its been almost three years and audio is still in a neglected state. The formal presented way of uploading “Public audio” requires paying a monthly fee to Distrokid (Clippsly not being mentioned in most announcements), and, if the article mentioned in this post Amplify Your Experiences with New Music - #7 by younite) still stands, after all the required hoops results in no payment to the artist. Prior to the update mentioned in this follow-up Supposedly public sound effects return "User is not authorized to access Asset" in other games four days ago it wasn’t possible to play Distrokid audio without the developer adding it to their inventory until this year.

It would be greatly appreciated if the team responsible for audio would continue to work on further developing public audio, by providing more external distributors to upload through, providing a more formal system for individual artists to upload to the platform, or working on more partnerships/incentives for existing music libraries and artists to bring their music to the platform. Or just something. It is VERY obvious in most games without a dedicated sound team that stock music is being used and this continues to be a disappointment compared to what audio used to be. For the size of Roblox as a platform, as well as the importance I think music has to creating a “metaverse”, it feels like the audio system could benefit from doing more to facilitate bringing artists in. The more flexible and lightweight the system to bring audio in, the more artists want to allow it to be brought in - additionally, every incentive or partnership provided can have a big impact.

(Edit: Edited the second paragraph for clarity and make it clearer the main thing I am giving feedback on is how this is handled first-party. I am not a lawyer and this is nonprofessional feedback)

We’ve been waiting for just a “few years” for public audios…

Roblox is for sure totally “unaware” of incoveniences…

This is not a update, this is a downgrade from Roblox’s trademark Bad Ideas Team™.

You’re more than allowed to use your own audio on Roblox? If song that you’ve purchased license to and which you’ve uploaded got moderated, contact Roblox at songclearance@roblox.com with the assed id and the license.

If you’re referring to use of stolen songs, e.g. using converters from services such as YouTube, it’s a simple and logical no. You’re legally not allowed to upload such content, and if found by copyright holder you may face legal problems, as well as your Roblox account getting moderated.

If you wish to public your songs to Roblox to be accessible to everyone, you have to use a distributor. For the current time being there are 2 open options:

There are currently no other ways for your music to be publicly available to others on Roblox.

I just tried Clippsly. It said I need a plus membership to upload a soundtrack, as well as the checkboxes say what I upload will not be added to Roblox.

I just want to use a 6 second sound effect in other games. I do not want to release a song or music or an album. just a sound effect. Roblox allowed sound effects to stay up after the removal update, but they refuse to let any new ones get uploaded.

Is your sound effect being classified as Audio/Music on upload? As far as I know Roblox doesn’t let sound effects with musical chimes through.

on roblox it says its approved for distribution, yet i still need the experience creator to have it in their inventory, have team create access, be friends with, or be manually added permission to be able to use it in a game. it says its audio / sound effect.

Last time I tried using it in a game, only I could hear it

I know what’s happening. User-uploaded sound effects do not work the same way as audio distributed to Roblox through third parties. When you put a sound effect on sale, you make it publicly available in the Creator Store for others to get and use in their experiences. However, this does not automatically allow the audio to be played in any Roblox experience, except for those that the owner has in their inventory (excluding distributed audio)

Yes I know that. I’ve had this issue for a few years now. I want to be able to use sound effects in other games. roblox allowed all other sound effects that existed prior to the update to stay up, why can they not allow new ones to get uploaded? I really hate that because I was a few months late to uploading an asset, now I can never use it for its intended purpose

They do allow new ones to get uploaded. I’ve successfully uploaded sound effects to my own account, then used the “distribute on creator store” option, and used those assets in other games. This should’ve been made possible some point around Jan 30, as indicated here:

Are you sure you’re enabling “Distribute on Creator Store” on your sound effects, and are you certain your sound effects are classified as “Audio / Sound Effect” on the store? Both are vital for them to be able to be used across the platform.

oh my god, i will check right now, ive been looking everywhere almost daily and somehow missed that message. thank you so much.
