[Update] Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

took an entire riot, but hey.
at least roblox is trying to be better

Itā€™s good to see Roblox listening us.
But I canā€™t say this audio update is good :smiling_face_with_tear:

I have participated in DevEx and my limit is 100.

Is there a possibility of Roblox Premium users being able to upload 100 sounds without completing ID verification, or perhaps a way to allow users to pay for extra uploads over the limit?

I have money to spare, but I am not willing to submit my ID into this processing system where I can have no control over my privacy.

Thereā€™s zero merit in me talking about the downsides of this update if I donā€™t have substantive or constructive criticism to give, so Iā€™m not going to do it. Thereā€™s no sense in me being an echo chamber for the disagreements that have already been passed around ad nauseam and there is better written constructive feedback that you can support instead if you dislike this update.

Itā€™s unfortunate that a lot of experiences will lose their audio, sure, but that doesnā€™t mean I canā€™t be excited for the alternatives Roblox are providing. Iā€™ve personally had a good time using the Licensed Music Catalogue and Iā€™m grateful that Roblox has licensed both music and SFX from top producers that would otherwise be an expensive and arduous or even inaccessible process for me as an individual. Additionally, a lot of experiences ā€” including some of my past projects ā€” are built on audio we donā€™t actually own, so this shouldā€™ve been a long time coming. Itā€™s lucky enough we donā€™t bear the individual brunt of what could be costly legal fees from getting sued for this kind of behaviour.

Iā€™m not looking at this strictly in the negatives because thereā€™s no reason to do it. Complaining about experiences losing audio isnā€™t going to do anything productive here so I see no reason to pitch into it because thereā€™s a lot more nuance than just ā€œRoblox is removing our audio, Roblox badā€.

Please note that regarding moderation Iā€™ve already called them out on numerous occasions because that side of things needs to improve wrt communication but thatā€™s the extent of it. Moderation doesnā€™t police assets and they assume in good faith that you have permission to use the content youā€™re uploading to the site. They canā€™t catch every single case of licensing violation, this was bound to occur.

Yes, weā€™re well aware of the general difficulty of filtering for Music vs SFX in audio related contexts right now. Rest assured relying on everyone naming their sound effects ā€œSFXā€ by convention is not the long term solution

The suit was dismissed back in September, and Roblox are now working with the NMPA and have struck a deal with them.

way too much free sound effect upload

It would be nice if they could work more on their moderation and copyright detection though so that this doesnā€™t have to happen. If Iā€™m correct, I think they hinted a few years ago at a RDC that they were planning on making the moderation better.

That hasnā€™t really happened yet to my knowledge, as it seems like itā€™s pretty much the same it as it is now.

If they could work on these two factors, I donā€™t see much of a reason for them to push this update the way they are right now.

Of course, you can only go so far with things like copyright detection but I feel like it could be built upon a bit more, even if it were to only be a little better.

Itā€™s already seemingly impossible to upload Never Gonna Give You Up on the website (I tried a year or so ago to test it) so itā€™s not like the copyright detection doesnā€™t work but they should focus more on these issues right now perhaps than on development related stuff since they got into a lawsuit apparently because they werenā€™t doing enough on their end to prevent it from happening.

Thatā€™s just my personal opinion, anyway.

Iā€™m glad to see that theyā€™re going to try to make the sound effects accessible.

Well, it didnā€™t last time I tried. Though itā€™s nice the results are mostly relevant now.

THANK YOU

for making this update 20% better

It still isnā€™t fixing the now ruined inventory of mine.

And, as I said in my previous replies;
Iā€™m not a very private person. I like all of my bios and stuff public!
If Iā€™m uploading an audio, thereā€™s a 99% hance I want it public.
Still not fixing it.
And, only 10 uploads is absurd. If you expect us to have almost none of the existing audio and to content delete half of them, please raise the limit for non ID verified people! I need to verify my ID soon, and itā€™s not right now, but I need more.

Also, I think that upload levels should depend on Premium levels too.

$5 - 5 more
$10 - 50(?) more
$19 - 100(?) more
So if somebody has 2000 and $19 premium they get 2100

You get 2000 monthly uploads if you have completed a developer exchange

Even YouTube, a platform oriented for media content, has plenty of false positives, and you expect Roblox to implement a system as well? They would probably automatically strike a majority of the audios anyway, better to save their resources in doing the opposite and manually approving them.

The addition of the SFX helps a lot. But could we get a refund on all the Robux we spent uploading audio prior to the free uploads?

Roblox has never stated that verification stops scammers. It just prevents them from verifying alts, as itā€™s much harder to fake a legal ID.

Well, at least an effort is being made to minimize the damage to a degree at all; not that this will really scale back the damage being done by that much.
The sound effects library is a bit of a disappointment with the naming (some of the sounds donā€™t even sound like what their name is) scheme, which only makes it harder to find suitable sound effects in the form of stock audios.

A good suggestion for finding music could be having your audio algorithm try to spot for repeating segments of beats/instruments. Usually music has that so this could help keeping some sfx out of the crossfire!

Great to know that the situation isnā€™t as bad as before. Knowing that Roblox is listening to the general publicā€™s opinion is good to know, and having this post sharing a detailed message of what is really happening behind the scenes will hopefully improve the general outlook of this update. Thank you Roblox.

make it 15 second audio please instead of 6 second
