[Update] Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

Now you have to add “sfx” into your search to increase your chances of getting actual sound effects from Roblox.

I wonder how many people would be less concerned if Roblox actually confirmed that they had to take this action due to legal notices (instead of the reason being that they believe 90% of creators want to have more control over their assets…for now it’s slightly the opposite because you can’t make audio public again even if you wanted to). Knowing them, I doubt they would but it’s just a theory.

There’s still an audio limit of 10? Come on, this is just pathetic. 10 is an insulting amount for people who can’t verify. It’s restricting creativity and potential game fidelity. Increase it eighty-fold or remove it entirely so we can actually make detailed games again.

Question: Let’s say I make a game using a sound effect by Roblox in Courtesy of APM Music, can I record the roblox game & upload to let’s say YouTube without receiving a copyright claim?

If I recall correctly, all sound effects are copyright free (they’re all about 5-10 seconds in length so a copyright claim would be outrageous)
Music tracks may be an issue but they should be fine since they’re uploaded to Roblox, a platform where basically anyone can upload its content onto YouTube. If you get a claim you should be able to successfully appeal it but YouTube should do an automatic check that detects copyrighted audio before it’s uploaded.

Basically, “We must protect your rights whether you like it or not.”
Yeah, I’m not sure that’s the real reason at all.

That right there is a hint that it had to do something with silencing music on the platform for a reason other than forcing audio to be private for the well being of players and creators. As I expected, they failed to differ sound effects from music for the assets that were longer than six seconds; instead everything less than six seconds “qualifies as a sound effect” according to the plugin.

Nice job trying to make it look like they chose the harsh deadline on their own (instead of from legal requests) and simply regretted it instead of changing it. As for non-financial related changes, I can already imagine some slightly worse ideas they could come up with for “indefinite forced privacy”.

Okay, take your time. Just remember that we’re waiting, since you stated the inability to distribute audio would only be temporary.

… Hello? I would like to make my audio public??? When are we getting this functionality?

That is what many of us are waiting for. I believe the suspension on public audio is all a setup so they can deal with something else, but I’m not sure

The copyright filter went bazooka joe after this update even struck down cartoon themes of all things. Not even sure I want to bother with audios anymore considering uploading feels like a gamble against a moderation land mine, and the failure to communicate then when and how of making audio public again. “temporary” is arbitrary when we get left in the silence after the update took effect.

I think that he is lying about two things and let me tell you why

You did this because you got sued for having tons of copyrighted music on the platform.

You’ve been taking things lightly since 2017. They rushed this update because they we’re sued, besides, they should test the update before releasing. I don’t know if it’s why the chat filter broke (there was a bug where you could chat swear words, and create accounts with swear words), and games were set to uncopylocked by default. But I do know that is the result in the following.

Moderation gets worse
The Marketplace broke
Developers like us are forced to use Roblox licensed SFX (Many of them are inappropriate) and Music which doesn’t fit any of our games.

Besides Roblox needs to fix all those updates even their moderation system is terrible.

If you would like to read here are some examples down below what going to happen soon or maybe right now

Examples

Let’s say you upload an audio that you bought a license for, then that gets deleted on Roblox which counts as one audio upload.

Small developers need to rely on the audio marketplace, besides ROBLOX licensed sound effects ranging from APM, Monstercat, etc, as is really boring and also

doesn’t fit any of our games.

If you’re a small developer that uploads audio that is appropriate but still gets moderated, that would also count as an upload slot.

I don’t know how people get 2000 uploads a month even though they didn’t DevEx.

Any games that hadn’t been updated recently are now broken

This also affects rhythm games for example robeats, funky Friday, etc. I tested robeats and it was fine but funky Friday broke.

There should be a feature where like if you go over the upload limit you have to pay in Robux

I could go on forever…

As a Developer, It is important that we rely on public audios not uploaded by Roblox. But all those limits are forcing us to use our main accounts which poses a serious risk of false moderation. Many developers could get banned for uploading audio that’s not harmful or inappropriate. Oh and by the way, if you hadn’t checked out the latest moderation topic here, Roblox moderation needs to be addressed, I recommend you go check it out.

Hopefully this post doesn’t get taken down.

Thank you for understanding

I don’t know, but they did say they were working on a solution to make audios public again but we don’t know when.

This post has lost alot of traffic in the recent days, it might contribute to ROBLOX kind of forgetting about having to make the changes (…)

It has indeed been nearly a month since the announcement of the update, and exactly 2 weeks after the update itself released. We’ve still seen no indication from DevRel or a Staff member that audios will be able to be made public in the foreseeable future.

Only thing we can do is keep complaining, or try to attempt to ignite more discussion regarding this issue. Bigger/solo developers have mostly solved this issue on their own, but smaller developers or dev teams utilizing group creations or Team Create are still badly affected by not being able to make audio public, or giving an experience access to use audio (IT STILL DOES NOT WORK. Currently the only audio I can hear in the game I’m working on, are audios made by the game creator, or by me. Other audios simply do not work even if they’re given permission.)

TL:DR: Give us an update. We’re trying to not lose hope here on this extremely simple yet powerful platform.

Greetings, imaginative Robloxians !

Looks like everyone is angry about this update, but I just got a way to get back happy on building your game ! Today I will try to show you the positive of this update instead of thinking about all your memories about old audios !

  1. Number of quality audios.

This thing is looking positive. If you don’t care, I can justify.

Indeed, you said that is not really great to hear this sound like this. But some peoples use those type of sounds in their so it doesn’t mean that a fart sound in ROBLOX is useless for the community.

Anyways, some peoples also think that it isn’t good quality sounds, but figure out it’s beacuse you don’t use them correctely, so try thinking about this when you see a Pro Sound Effects’s SFX.

  1. APM Music.

Many peoples say that it’s very sad to lose it’s raining tacos, a bit like me, however you can hear it on Youtube. APM Music is a good quality licensed music that tried to find the best name for players to find their wish. Example I have a friend that tried to find a shop music and he finded a audio that sounds great with a shop. So I am not very sad about this.

  1. Audio Upload.

This is the thing that many hated. 10 Audios limit. Wait, imagine you are in 2021 and you are uploading 10 audios with a lenght of 1 minute and 30 seconds. It costs 70 robux for a audio between 1 and 2 minutes, so 10 x 70 = 700 Robux. Personally I prefer uploading 10 free audios but waiting 1 month to upload other ones than uploading 10 audios for 700 robux.

Thanks for listening to me.

Best regards,

Vikko151.

OK, so what you’re saying is that we should move to other platforms and let Roblox have only its trash royalty-free music. Got it.

@AMysteriousMan12 I see well what you say.

The message that I just wanted to pass is that we don’t have to swear to god to restore this song. It’s not the detail that could destroy roblox audios.

Anyway thanks for your reply !

Vikko151.

Also, for completing, I’m still having memories about so, figure out that I am also saying a bit the same thing.

ID verification can increase it to 100 per month. but im curious as to why some users get 2000

happy 1000

Well we just hit 1000 replies. Sadly even with all this talk, I doubt they’ll completely revert the changes or speed up their mission of eventually allowing audio to go public at the uploaders’ discretion. They seem to be focused on other things however that does not explain why they rushed this update and failed to improve moderation.

Obviously, Roblox staff isn’t going to make an announcement, but if you didn’t know, Roblox has been actively whitelisting audios of approved creators. They will have to slowly review each audio and make sure it is safe, as one mistake can lead to major repercussions.

Do you know of any other creators whose music Roblox allowed to go public again? Because up to this point I’ve assumed that they allowed Parry Gripp’s music to be playable again only because he requested it and considered that it was a false takedown.
