Just found out an hour ago, by accident, that EVERY SINGLE audio I’ve uploaded to Pet Simulator X since MARCH OF THIS YEAR… has not been playing.
This is because it was uploaded to my In-Dev branch of the game (mind you, it’s in the same group).
Nothing appeared in output. All developers, including myself, heard the sounds fine INCLUDING in-game. Everyone else didn’t. I had no idea.
Aside from the obvious question of, why do >3 second audios need to be checked for copyright?, why is this process so non-apparent and confusing that I had NO IDEA FOR 8 MONTHS in a game that frequents over 100,000 CCU?!
It appears, through testing, this is because the audio is created in code. It does not matter if it is an ID or a URL. Even if you go out of your way to test, in my case, on the live version of the game (studio only), you only get this little hidden popup:
Please, it’s been 7 months. When will be able to actually make audios public or allow universes that we don’t own to use our audios? I hate having to grant audio permissions for every game I want to use it on, and sometimes even upload audios on other users’ behalf to allow them to use certain audios on my games.
While their silence could be due to them not ready to make any announcements yet (Though they should still at least tell us something), I’m hoping that it’s not a case of an idea that was planned, but then scrapped.
To elaborate a bit on this, way back in 2012, there was a blog post written by Navin Lal, a former Software Engineer of Roblox. Some oldies may remember him as njay. The blog was about the future of Groups, with ideas such as Lua APIs for groups, allowing ranks and group logo in games, etc. There was also discussion about ranked matches and a global leaderboard score for groups when they were at war with other groups.
It was quite the ambitious project, and had a lot of people excited for it. Unfortunately, nothing ever came of it, and users eventually found out a few years later that the ideas never happened, because njay had stopped working for Roblox, and with no one else there to pick up the projects, they were ultimately quietly scrapped.
I sincerely hope that is not the case with this, as this is something that is important to Experiences, and users. I know that there are a lot of updates and plans that Roblox has quietly canceled over the years without ever announcing it, and it would genuinely suck if that was the case here.
That blog post I forgot how hyped that got me back in the day.
I’m sure they’re making us wait until next year-ish, it wouldn’t make sense for them to have designed the functional aspect of it in the asset configure page if it wasn’t coming— although that has been there since this announcement…
This is why they need to figure out a way to unlock the marketplace for new SFX (since they tried to keep old SFX longer than 6s public) ; this would be a good temporary solution until the marketplace is re-enabled for all non-moderated audio.
It’s simply unbelievable that audio only works for the uploader or developers in some cases. You shouldn’t have to make an alternate account just to see if audio is working for everyone. I’ve had this problem as well, and its infuriating that you cant tell somethings wrong with the audio. There is barely any benefit from having only the developers hear uploaded audio. How many more months will we have to endure till public sound effects return?
Although I don’t yet have a screen recorder to prove it, I’d like to add that while one of my short audio assets was chosen to remain public, it is still shown as private on the creator dashboard.
I’m going to come out and say while yes, I sympathize with your complaints about this taking far too long, please consider just how many audios were uploaded before March 22nd, 2022. The answer is a lot of audios. They’re without a doubt having to go through assets in the hundreds of millions.
I say this to everyone who I have quoted in this post: “The only thing all of you can do is either wait patiently or complain.” And both options suck.
This isn’t necessarily the problem that some of us have been discussing, but rather the fact that audio uploaded after March 22 still can’t be manually made public by the uploader regardless of whether it’s a sound effect. I agree that it would take quite a while for Roblox themselves to continue un-privating old SFX.
That doesn’t seem like an issue to me… It is not practical to go through all the old content and try to determine what should automatically be public domain. Audios can remain private by default, the backlog of audio content that isn’t important will remain private because the majority of developers will not go through the effort to configure their old assets. That way, only developers who are actively trying to participate in the content marketplace can request approval for public sounds
Yet here we are, still waiting, so tell me, do you think that Roblox is being practical?
(just going to say that I don’t want this to be a storm of nothing but negativity and complaints, because this whole situation honestly is kind of hilarious; not because it’s funny, but because it’s audacious. for example, this quoted post)
EDIT I understand everyone here has a VERY good reason to complain, but as far as I can see, that’s not going to get us anywhere.
