Using 3rd party mesh with layered clothing tutorial

Hello, I’ve followed the basic layered clothing tutorial to create a simple “sweater”, imported into my game and all worked well.

I re-did the tutorial but attempted to bring in a 3rd party mesh created separately to use as the clothing item. When I get to the rigging step the mesh does not move with the armature.

I’ve searched around on the forum and internet for a solution but there are so many different ways (it seems) to do this that finding an answer to this exact question was not possible. It also doesn’t help that I’m relatively new the whole exercise of doing any kind of rigging.

My question is: is what I’m trying to do even possible? Or is modifying the existing inner cage copy (as the tutorial guides) the only way to reliably create layered clothing?
