Using a 1 second sound effect from another game?

I’m making a game similar to Dead By Daylight, and I’d like to use their pallet placing, pallet breaking sound effects. Both are ~1 second long, and I can’t find similar sound effects anywhere. Would I get terminated for uploading them?

Don’t use it. They are copyrighted, it doesn’t matter if it’s one second. Even if you don’t get caught, it’s still not right to do so. If it’s a super generic sound, I would recommend trying to reproduce it on your own or finding someone to do so, so you can say that you generated the sound.

Roblox might get sued too, as they use the 1 second oof sound from Messiah, ROBLOX denies to pay Tom Tallarico. I recommend you not to do it.

similar to the roblox oof sound, it can still be copyrighted for sounds even under 1 second

Buying actual wooden pallets and reproducing the sound effects myself would be very costly, and impractical.

A lot of places give away wooden pallets for free but I don’t know how it is around where you are. I would try to find free use sound effects and modify them to make them sound more like you want. Also it’s not an excuse to use copyrighted materials.

  • Those sound effects were made by someone else.
  • Even if they are ~1-second effects, the person who made them owns the credit and copyright

I recommend asking permission to use it from the person who made that sound

or you can hire a music/sound composer to recreate these sound effects. It won’t cost too much for a 1 second sound effect.

Hope you found this helpful.

I would say that is just too risky.

This is not very smart, copyright is a serious topic, you cant take chance in this.
A case can be filed against you for using someones copyrighted work and may result in heavy fine. But in this scenario, I guess it wont be that severe, but dont take it as a habit. It is simply not healthy.

According to the #2 rule of devforum claiming someone elses work your own results in a permanent ban as I recall. So you can take an example from this how serious copyrights are.

Those games usually get a strike if someone reports it. The process is slow but the action will be taken.

Please dont take this as a habit, its a serious and complex topic.

I think you should not use it what so ever try making your own sound or get someone to do it sure it may take longer but it’s safer if your not sure you will banned or not just don’t do it.

@kaspar1230, basically, no you’re not allowed and you risk getting a copyright strike by uploading it. The scale, complexity, or size of the asset is irrelevant. If you need a similar sound, there are plenty of open-source sound files you can use, just search sound websites with a CC0 license.

Whether or not other people get away with it doesn’t matter. Don’t use other’s IP unless you have permission.

@Vortbloxian and @xLinkTijgerYT the “Oof” sound is applicable here, but let’s not confuse legal proceedings of an ongoing situation with using sounds in-game. The difference is that Roblox wouldn’t get sued if you uploaded anything that infringes IP, they would just remove the asset and give you a copyright infringement strike.

There are many places online that can provide sound effects with free to use licenses. It’s best to try to find one of those before resorting to stealing.
