Rank Structure

This section will cover the basics of the ranks within the United States Navy.

Reference - federalpay.org

When talking about ranks in the United States Military, there are paygrades and the ranks themselves.

  • Paygrades start with an letter (E, W, or O) and end in one or two digits.
    E - Enlisted
    W - Warrant Officer
    O - Officer

Our group does not use the Warrant Officer ranks at this time.

The numbers range 1 to 11; however, 11 is not common. The higher the number, the further along a sailor is in his or her progression. For example, E7 is higher than E3. Do note that an Officer (O1 for example) is higher than any of the Enlisted (E) ranks.

So what’s the point in this? The letter and number combination (paygrade) is associated with a universal payscale across all branches. The ranks (the text following the paygrade) is specific to branches and their chain of command.

For example, consider O3 Captain. The O3 is the paygrade and Captain is the rank.

The final thing to note is that this can get tricky as sometimes there is more than one rank per paygrade. For example, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy and Command Master Chief Petty Officer are both E9.

  • From here, the categories of ranks in the United States Navy are as follows (highest to lowest):
    -Flag Officer (O7 through O11)
    -Senior Officer (O5 through O6)
    -Junior Officer (O1 through O4)
    -Warrant Officer (W1 through W5)
    -Senior Enlisted Advisor (E9)
-Senior Noncommissioned Officer (E7 through E9)
    -Noncommissioned Officer (E4 through E6)
    -Junior Enlisted (E1 through E3)
