A few weeks ago, @badcc and I released our game VOLT! Based on Tron and it’s awesome lightcycles, we wanted a cool game that was fun to play and true to the movie. I started this project solo many months ago, and then got Badcc onboard, along with DTF who composed the music. Now we’ve got a complete game! I would have made this post sooner but I wanted gamemodes added first, they just came out today!
Using your lightcycle, you use your wall of light to cut off other players, killing them. You can play here!
We’re open to feedback but VOLT development isn’t our main focus at the moment. We’ll do incremental updates like new bikes, maps, colors and trails but right now we’re pretty focused on making a new game (that isn’t Tron related).
Some actual gameplay, although from before the “game rounds” got removed. (back then it was more a “Free for all, last man standing” thing, not a “spawn when you want”) (As you can tell from the video, I’m horrible)
@asimo3089some feedback:
When I played, the replication of trails would lead to weird results in the deathcam.
Spectating someone would see them going through a trillion trails and not dying. that’s actually the only bad thing I could think of
The lobby and the maps are nice, so is the sound, …
Customization seems like a fun thing, yet there is no pay2win (which is good).
As Sofloann said: Using lightjets would be a lot of fun: flying and pewpewpew-ing around.
That would problably totally change the game from what it is now, so eh… maybe another project…
I might make a new video now with the new gamemodes, huehuehue
I think this game has a lot of potential but here are some of my thoughts:
-Survival and Elimination are the same thing
-It seems like the pieces you find in Snake seem to be local? Kind of ruin the whole fight for the same pieces like you would in Snake. It also counts kills instead of the points you collect.
-There’s gotta be a more distinct way to show who is holding the disc in King of the Disc or something because when I had it literally no one tried coming for me. Also this happened: http://i.imgur.com/x1vaVcn.png
-DTF did a good job emulating the TRON style music but maybe it all sounds the same? I can’t tell if the same song is looping or if they just sound similar. Maybe something more action-y would be better when you’re actually on the arena.
-The text that displays who derezzed who is black so it’s hard to see.
-The voting thing is so tiny, maybe a GUI voting system would work better.
-Arcade game is pretty neat.
-Maps need variety, arena ones feel the same.
-Personally I find the game play to be rather… boring. It was neat at first but it gets old real quick. I think the best way to fix that isn’t to add things like: Disc Battles? Light Jets and Skydiving? Battle Tanks? Light Runner Races? Maybe a two team light cycle battle like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GBLtnxxtzQ
-New sound effects, the explosions and engine sounds are so bland. It’d be cool if you could hear other cycles zoom past you when they’re near. Examples in the video I above.
-One time it wouldn’t put me into the rounds like I was in the AFK mode, but I wasn’t int he AFK mode. I think it had something to do with the Arcade.
Another thing i’d like to add. One of the most frustrating and pointless additions.
-Each player takes 2 hits. Why do players take 2 hits to kill? It took 7 players to get 2 kills on average each round. 99% of the time people launch themselves face first in a wall when they think they’re in danger.
Please please PLEASE let suicides count as kills if they’ve been hit by an opponent’s laser beforehand.
No please let it take two hits. I run into my trail all the time, the game would way too frustrating with everyone constantly dying, at least that’s what the game was like when it first came out.
I hate to say this as the scripting, interface, building and general polish are just so excellent… but I didn’t find it fun at all. It felt rather like everyone was just driving around rather randomly until someone hit another trail by chance.
It feels like the maps are either too large or too complicated. It feels a bit like the maps are designed for the max number of players, so if there’s only 4 of them, then nothing happens.
The original versions [of tron] were just flat, 1-level maps, so it was always easy to see where you were and where everyone else was. The mini-map was a good idea, but it’s a fast-paced game where looking at the mini-map has gotten me killed more times than I’d like. Maybe try adding screen arrows to the other players/objective?
Really cool game, great job. The light-cycles drive really nicely and the maps are well designed.
Did you play test the game with 1 hit kills? How did that go? Currently I think some of the rounds work well with 2 hit kills, like Snake, Forever and Survival, but I think Continuous doesn’t really work well with 2 hit kills. The round is kind of short, so many players end the round on no kills, which seems really frustrating.
Another thing is when you pull off a really cool move like jumping up from a lower level and cutting someone off, but they don’t die
I would be really interesting in seeing how the game plays with one hit kills, so maybe a 1 hit kill game mode would be cool.
