VR error message showing when I join a game, but I don't use VR

Every time I join a Roblox game, I get this error message. Although I’m still able to play the game and nothing really happens as a result of the error.

This is unexpected because I don’t use VR. I haven’t connected any VR devices to my computer in maybe 2-3 years. I would not expect to get any message about VR. It would be nice if it gave me some info as to what “this software” is referring to.

This started happening about 2 days ago, otherwise I’ve never seen this error before.

The same thing has been happening to me as well

I got this as well a few days ago. My system has seen the Oculus app, the newly rebranded Meta Quest Link, SteamVR (Steam Link for Quest + just SteamVR), and Immersed (not exactly a VR streaming app).

Bitdancer replied to another topic about this message:

I agree that this dialog box shouldn’t appear if the player isn’t using a VR headset (like if one isn’t connected to their computer), and the message should at least show the name of the incompatible program.

EDIT: Looking at the first post of the other topic, it looks like a notification instead of a window, but I think it’s about the same thing.

Thanks, I didn’t notice that.

Uninstalling oculus fixed this for me.

I hope they fix this annoying pop-up soon because I don’t want to uninstall Oculus, as I use it for other VR games.

I hope they fix this because the Meta Quest Link (formerly Oculus PC) is the recommended way to develop Roblox games for VR on Meta Quest.

The message is a warning that the client might crash, not that it will definitely crash.

I think changing the behavior so the warning message doesn’t show up every time would be a good idea. Currently the warning message is more annoying and intrusive than the crash bug itself (which I never had happen).

That part makes sense to me, but given that Meta Quest Link is the intended way to develop for Meta Quest, I find this behavior very annoying because:

  • The error message tells me that something VR-related is a problem, but not what. My initial guess was SteamVR or ALVR being on my system, and others might have guessed Virtual Desktop.
  • There is no obvious way to acknowledge the message. If you decide to develop for VR, or simply just want to place PC VR games on your Meta Quest, you get that notification on every launch.
  • This change was unannounced, I think.

@mrfergie and @TheNexusAvenger, this is fair and constructive criticism, but in our defense, we do not expect it to take us too long to fix the issue now that we know the root cause. Once resolved, the notification will be gone for good.
