Ways to improve this map?

Basically I have a map here for a survival game and it’s about done. But it feels bland, it doesn’t invite exploration and it seems to be lacking something. I have tried adding some landmarks, there will be hidden shrines for gameplay purposes, I even added a light fog to draw you around to see what is in the distance. There are tunnels even, but it still feels lacking to me.

It takes place on an island so I couldn’t make it this giant expansive map with biomes and such, maybe in the future. It’s not super large because I want to encourage players to meet up and there is a building system so I want there to be some tension between players building kind of close together if they grow bases too big. All the Trees and rocks and such can be destroyed for resources.

Some Pictures Volcano

Cracked Mountain thing I forget the name of

Small mountain

Inside one of the caves

Birds-eye of the entire map

So this is my first time using terrain rather then bricks as well. Any feedback/ideas to try and spice this map up would be appreciated

Good work but you’re definetely right that it’s fairly lacking. I deal with a similar issue on my builds, so here’s some methods that will definetely help:

  • Look into foliage methods like particles, or meshes to make a more immersive grass, bush, and other plant system.
  • Add some more tree density and color variation in the grass to the trees.
  • Blend the grass and other materials in the terrain better for some more color variation. It seems to cut off between green grass to charred ground on the volcano, and from lush grass to stone, or beach. Consider adding a midsection using grass.
  • Particle effects and lighting. Add a big smoke plume to the volcano, consider using rain, or change the lighting and fog to match the environment better and make the screen feel more filled, like sun rays or some slight blur.
  • The terrain looks very smooth in some areas but very chunky in others, definitely smooth out the blocky terrain somewhat so it feels more natural with the terrain around.
  • I also notice that the ore vein things don’t match their surroundings very well, consider using a slate material instead of what looks like smooth plastic.
  • I don’t know if you have this already, but add sounds, like birds chirping or waves crashing. That will definetely help alot if you haven’t done it already!

In summary: Smooth things out, and generally just add more visual content. It feels like it’s missing something because there’s not really that much to begin with, though you have a wonderful start and progress made. Good luck, looking forward to seeing more!

Round out the edges of the mountain more, more varietys of trees that maybe use materials, other than that it’s nice

Looks really good the volcano can, get a little work did you can try adding a path with lava coming down the volcano. And you should map the volcano a bit higher so it will no be facing flat on the ground, and the mountains can be more higher also like you can add some trees on it and around it. i would suggest making the mountains a bit closer! but yea you should add rocks, more trees around the mountains and make the the volcano a bit better like this maybe.Good work on your map, keep it up man!

Hey CrispyBrix!

I completely agree with your statement, “But it feels bland, it doesn’t invite exploration and it seems to be lacking something.” I feel like it could generally use far more effort.

Suggestions:

[Fix/Redo]

  • You quite literally just cut using the region tool into a block of smooth terrain, it doesn’t feel like you put enough time carving it out, smoothing the edges, it’s completely unrealistic even for ROBLOX. I’d suggest revising that.
  • Throughout the map I’d go over it all, smoothen out sharp edges, add MORE COLOR, the solid green mixed with patches of brown are not enough. The current color pallete is like you said, “Bland.”

[Add[

  • More biome zones
  • More vegetation meshes
  • Beach front in the middle of the lake area/a reason/advantage to settle near the lake
  • More platforms with heights so players have desires to colonize certain zones rather than others
  • Hopefully an intricate cave system to stimulate exploration
  • Maybe animal mobs for players to hunt for resources

Goodluck!

Could I ask what lighting that is? Also, the map looks pretty well. Maybe try adding some rocks or some more foliage. As well, you can add arches, cliffs, and more large landmarks. Landmarks make games more fun, because people can reference their position, and events happen on them. A flat land is recognized a flat land. Over all, this map looks especially well made! :+1:
